article image placeholderSarah Winchester and the Mystery House - The History Chicks
Hey, swell, it's Rachel. I love this podcast podcast. The History Chicks just listen to the episode that is about Sarah Winchester and the mystery house that she is famous for based in the San Jose area, I believe technically Santa Clara when it was built and it was so interesting for me to hear because I was only familiar

The ghost thing didn't really come out there for me, but it was just fascinating to be there and see all of these places that led to nowhere. And the house is just extraordinary. So I recommend that anybody that can get there, please do go. I will say it is very much so a tourist trap right now or has been there's a pretty massive gift shop with a lot of things that have nothing to do with the mystery house

@CaliGooner What about the gardens?

They did mention the tourist trap part, although I didn't know there was a bar, which sounds kind of chill and nice. Apparently, the gardens are also supposed to be beautiful. So I'm curious if you had an opportunity to walk along the ground there. Look at the garden in when you were there as well

Hey, Rachel, one thing that I think is very, very obvious when you step foot on the property is how much effort and thought went into the architecture and just the general landscaping of the building and the property. To this day, it remains a fairly immaculate place to visit, given the fact that I believe there was an original fire on the property years ago and then obviously weathering and just years of tourists walking in and out of it. I thought that it was beautiful. The gardens were pristine

Haunted houses & capitalism 💸

And I know listen, listen, listen to Sarah Winchester and the related to her by marriage or something has been quoted as saying that it looks like someone who's, like, deranged or unstable, made the house because there are just so many things that were kind of tacked on or built on a whim. And there's something amazing about that. I also didn't know that the house was inspiration for, I think, Walt Disney's Haunted House or something

And if there's any questions that I can answer for you, I'll be happy to, although it was a year ago and we covered quite a few women since then. But given I will try and answer anything, but if not, thank you again. Bye

@EssephVee So great to hear from you!

And so then to learn about these grounds too, and so much more of the history and the episode and then just the historical context too, really just completely fulfilled the huge nerd in me. So thank you. Something I would love to hear your perspective on, actually is you all have impressively created over 200 episodes of this show. So you've highlighted some pretty amazing women, and I've been making my way through some of the shows, but have not listened to all over 200 quite yet

Thank you for asking!

Quite honestly, Zephyr Wright, we thought, oh, it'll be a real short episode. She was just a Cook, right? No, she was so much more than that. And that's kind of what happens with everybody that we cover. We go in knowing a little or nothing in some cases, and we sort of fall in love with all of these women. And that's when we record is when we kind of get them. I think I answered all your questions
