Please place the oxygen mask on yourself first

I thought to myself, shouldn't it be to assist your loved one, like your child or your spouse or your family, before you assist yourself? To be honest, I was so deeply disturbed. And you see, I was disturbed because all my life I was raised in a way to attend to the needs of others first. And if I think back, I would say that this originated from my Christian background

The subject was value creation and it was just one of those special subjects which are taught to children in school and I'm sure a lot of schools have that or probably every school has that. So anyway, I just got reminded of how in our value creation classes also we were taught the virtues of honesty, loving others, caring about others. But it was never, not even for once was it about loving yourself

And yes, that makes me realize that we do not take self love seriously. And this self love, as you said, it comes with a lot of guilt. I don't know why. I mean, isn't it good that you are taking care of yourself so that you are in a better position to take care of your loved ones in a better way? I mean, this is the most logical question that comes to my mind. And yet, self love is so ignored by us individuals

But also we tend to call people who tend to their own needs as being selfish, right? People who are looking after out for themselves or like to taking care of their own needs is often seen as selfish. And I think I've also heard people say like, oh, you shouldn't do that, you should serve other people and et cetera, et cetera. So it is interesting

It's interesting how there's also this idea that motherhood, right, if you're a mother, then you have to sacrifice. Not have to, but mothers generally tend to sacrifice for their children. But I think this is also something that a lot of mothers do and a lot of women do. And I've seen a lot of women also lose their own identity and sense of themselves because their needs become lesser than other people
