Resistance to Women in Leadership roles

article image placeholderUploaded by @candylives
And it took a great number of conversations and empathetic listening on my part to get to a point where I had to say I had to prove to my conversations, my words and actions that I was the right person for the role. And their respect grew for me over time. And there were times that I was accused of being power hungry or controlling when there were situations where I just had to reprimand or take a firm stance in addressing grievances of members

A reflection of my own personal journey. #awareness #women #reflective #socialissue

Continued conversation…

That even though I won't deny that there have been increased number of equal opportunities for women in career, in work and in leadership roles but at the field level, women in leadership do undergo a number of challenges and biases based on their sex. And I believe honestly, that leadership is often attributed and misconceived to be a male quality. And when in fact, it is not. Leadership is a quality that is present in both men and women

And I'm really very happy for the bill that is passed for reservation for women, which is passed yesterday. So I'm a bit happy with that because that might bring a lot of change with regard to the leadership. So, once again, thank you so much for coming up with this topic and giving such a wonderful insight. Thank you Candy. Have a great day

And there is still quite a long way to go in terms of change in perceptions and actually having equal opportunity in the workplace without people becoming uncomfortable or resisting that. And until we get to the point where the experiences of men and women are equal and there is literally what is it not just an allowance that it's okay for women and their experiences to be different from men candy their experiences and they have an equal standing. So I definitely think that's going to take a long time

And it was for a home improvement store, and it was 140,000 square foot. It was a very large store with many departments and many opportunities for people to begin their management journey. And when I was given the position of this brand new store and opening this store, it fell upon me to go and get managers for all the different areas and all of the responsibilities that were within the store

So I'm glad that you, as a leader, recognized it and supported them. I think that was very awesome. I know you did mention, like, it's not the eye, but I think it takes a different, unique style of leadership to be aware of the struggles of each staff and to support them, support them as they see fit. So I think this is absolutely marvelous and also a teaching moment for other leaders coming up, and as a man as well

They become more aware, and then we are like, okay, it's happening, it's happening, and we need to change this aspect of how women are treated. And I think, as you also said, it is a conversation that involves both men and women. It's something that I have learned, and it requires participation, right? It requires participation. But of course, I think that it's going to take time

Hey, Kenny, that's a crazy experience, and I appreciate you sharing a little bit more about your journey and the challenges you faced in the professional setting where people, especially older people, it seems like the gentleman who made the remark was an older gentleman. There's just some old beliefs that are still holding on in the older generation, and I think that we are shifting out of it

And I'll even give an example of where I was promoted or I had accepted a leadership position for a healthcare system in a rural area. And what people saw, for the most part, was a young black woman leading this large team, and a lot of biases and things that people needed to work through internally came out with that one of them

Hello and thank you for taking the time to respond to this well and for joining the conversation. I think you raised an important point when you said that. I think you were talking about the generational gap where the current people who are in leadership are from a different era and they do have an older belief system, while the younger generation, like my generation and young a generation, they just think very differently. We have different lifestyles, prioritize different things, and we have a different way of doing things
