Kwanzaa | Day 1 UMOJA

article image placeholderUploaded by @Block24Media
The seven day festival was founded in 1966 by Dr. Malana Karinga as a pushback on the commercialism of Christmas and a way for African Americans to celebrate the holiday through community building practices shared across the continent of Africa. All right, so, in fact, one might say that Kwanzaa has similarities with thanksgiving in the United States or the yam festival in Ghana and Nigeria. Now, five common sets of values are central to the activities of the week in gathering, reverence, commemoration, commitment, and celebration. Right

While I love that you're doing this swell cast on Kwanzaa, I also grew up celebrating in my household. It was important for me and my siblings to know about Kwanzaa, especially me and my older siblings. On TikTok in Black TikTok, there has been a huge uproar about the doctor that created so called created TikTok. I mean, that created Kwanzaa. In fact, they're saying it wasn't created by this doctor. It was actually created by a woman

Thank you so much, sir, for explaining this. I mean, I've always grown up hearing about Kwanzaa, and every year, people on Facebook try to explain to me what we'll try to explain to everyone, I guess, what Kwanzaa really means to us. But this was a really solid explanation. It was really solid information that you shared. I love how you put it. I love how you made it simple enough for everyone to understand in

I haven't heard anything about the doctor. I have to dig a lot deeper into that and see what's going on. But, yeah, I just. For me, I've heard about it growing up, and I just really embraced the principles over the last few years and just really tried to implement them during this time of year and really throughout the entire year, just trying to make it more to mean more to me and my way of life. So that's really the goal for me

Well, yes, same here. I heard a lot growing up, and I just was always intrigued and by it. And then as I started to do my own homework on the principles of it, I was just like, yeah, this is something that we all should embrace. These are things that we should implement into our culture
