It in 1908. Werner W. Tandy Senior, who lived from 1885 to 1949, was the first black american architect registered in New York state. He designed Villa Lorero on the Hudson river, the mansion of hair care magnate Madam C. J. Walker. Tandy is also known for founding Alpha Phi Alpha for fraternity at Cornell University.
