On piracy and plagiarism

article image placeholderA Take on Book Piracy and Plagiarism
Today on work advice, let me combine the two things I do, which is assist the publishing ecosystem and also spend approximately an hour each day as a part of the creator economy. One problem that has no solution, no quick solution, is plagiarism. You will get plagiarized if you do something original. I want you to know this in advance, primarily because whenever plagiarism happens to people, they are caught like a deer in headlights

And sometimes I think we've gone a wrong way in defining creativity as something original, because I think about an advancement in math or science. We may use previous research and then add to it like the expression standing on the shoulders of giants, except when it comes to art, music, poetry, we associate those with our individuality, and we kind of believe that they belong to us. Whereas if someone discovers a mathematical formula, other people can use it in advance on it

I think it is much more conceptual and deeper than that in terms of what really drives people to do these kind of things, which is to say that what kind of an ecosystem have we created where there is this pressure to be, quote, original? Which is a wonderful point that you brought out. There's another Neil Gaiman quote in this regard, which is, originality is nothing but undiscovered plagiarism
