The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

article image placeholderUploaded by @Binati_Sheth
The Kulkchitra youth happens to think that women are pious creatures, right? How naive are we? So I really liked that the characters in the book are represented, including the female characters, to be, like, conniving and cruel and strong and just multi dimensional. The way I laughed, I genuinely laughed out loud. When Dropathy describes Yudishtar I don't want to spoil this line, but, like, the way she is roasting her husband's in her head, it's funny, right?

But this one, I really enjoy it because as you said, it's a nohole barred perspective of a woman who was a victim actually of the circumstances around her and was her destiny and her fate and what she had to do with her life were decided by a bunch of men. But how she goes about navigating within that, it's really interesting and I need to really refresh my mind because it's been quite a long time since I read the book

Also, I really, really liked how Kundi and all of these ladies are represented because every time, you know, this never made sense to me when I was younger and I heard like this pious version of all the pandemic side of things whenever the Mahabharat was talked about or recited. And I'm like, they are in the Kalu. To survive in the Kalu, you have to do Kaur things. If you are pious, you are dead right
