Smoker or Smoker’s parent?

article image placeholderUploaded by @ashmi
Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, heroin, opium are some of the common substances used. Now, the reasons for drug abuse can be many. From family discord, that is emotional challenges at home, to just trying to fit in, that is peer pressure. Family history of drug abuse and traumatic events can also be the reasons for drug abuse among teens. Now, there is a difference between drug use and abuse

But among boys it's very, very much. I believe that at every point things have to be worked out also. What is cool, what is not cool has to be made clear. If one does not smoke, one does not drink, one is not into this. You can still be a cool person. Because once you get into this abuse, your life is destroyed forever. This is damage beyond repair. It is very difficult for any child or any addict to come out of this

So my message to parents today is they have to challenge themselves and the kids need to see them handling high challenge activity and this will invariably help them model their life to handle high challenge activity like study. That's it. That's my take on smoking and how the parents need to handle this

And also the signs and symptoms of a person of a kid or a child who is into drug abuses. These cannot be generalized but some points one can note all along the kid will be actively participating in family functions, gatherings, occasions and all. All of a sudden the kid withdraws. Withdraws from talking to family members. Or he may go somewhere unnoticed and suddenly appears back. The eyes will be red, pupil will be mostly dilated

And yeah, we always want to talk about the big quote, unquote, big three, but there's more addictions out there than that, and we should be talking about those as well, because you should want your children to be addiction free from anything. You should want them to be addicted to anything. You should want your children to live a good life. So those are just my thoughts

Drugs can affect any family but by talking with kids and staying involved in their lives we can keep them safe. And also I think it's better to take them to various hobbies, sports and clubs because that is the time when they have lot of energy and they really don't know how to handle their hormones, how to handle that extra energy. So actually they need that energy to be aligned in the right manner

So that means the way you convey your things to them acts matters a lot, and that makes a lot of difference. And I really observed it and the moment you shared this. Well, the only thing is, at that particular age, it's very common to get distracted and to get attracted towards things that we should not get attracted to. And the parents actually must take some kind of best methods or must use of best methods to help their children know the things

@ashmi

Hi Ashmi. Very well. I could relate with you because I'm also school coordinator, but fortunate enough, I have not come across any such incidents so far. And I wish I shouldn't be coming across. But yes, that has become a fact that drug abuse or substance abuse has become a harsh reality of life. You talked about many factors which may be responsible. You defined it so well

I have seen children coming from home where either of the parent is alcoholic and the child is so averse to alcohol, becomes averse to alcohol. So it could work either way around. But yes, environment is the key. And also having an open space where the child feels comfortable enough to discuss any discomfort in school or feels free to be able to talk about a friend that he or she feels is indulging in drugs, et cetera, et cetera. I think that's very important. Great post there

We went on family vacations all the time, pretty much. I had a perfect life. So, I mean, I don't know what happened with me versus my sisters that made me go off the primrose path and to rebellion, because I was smoking and drinking by the time I was 1314. I think the first time I smoked weed was when I was 13 years old. And I'm 42 now. Now. And it's quite a struggle to get through substance abuse
