Author Luc Leruth on writing 'Rumble in a Village'- A book that goes beyond the clichés of Indian rural life.

article image placeholderUploaded by @Ramya
Authored by Luke Lehruth and genresi rumble in a Village starts out as a murder mystery in the backdrop of an unassuming Indian village. But the narrative soon broadens into a quirky, insightful look at Indian rural life and the shenanigans of the NRI protagonist Anil Singh, who lands in his ancestral village of Palanpur in Uttar Pradesh following an unexpected inheritance

And the book is in her memory. As for the collaboration between Joy and I, because that's another unusual feature of this book, we wrote it for Hands, if you wish. So so far none of us has provoked a dual with the other, or with anybody else for that matter. We are certainly very much on speaking terms, and I think we both benefited from collaboration that really involved two different points of view. And I think the rules were right

So this characterization of Anil is bang on, I'd say, for it is true that a lot of NRIs, and to some extent even city dwellers in India, suffer from the good old days syndrome, where they unrealistically glorify village life. Poverty is romanticized and confused with simplicity of life, leading to a warped misconception that villages have better social bonding, are morally and spiritually better, and live more fulfilled lives

And I have a story of a girl that I saw on the motorbike. Now they are on motorbikes, the girls in Palampur. They were not on motorbikes when we were there. In the 1980s. I would perhaps like to complete my answer to this question by having a message that goes beyond NRIs or people in cities in India. It's probably for people everywhere. We all have roots in villages in one way or the other. In the west, we have gradually lost touch

Oh, yes. The bit where the first tractor comes into Palanpur was a really well written part of the book that really stood out and brought out the stark castus divide in Palanpur. A writer, when portraying several characters, may often end up painting a portrait of a place that functions as a catalyst and molds the more traditional characters that animate A story. So the village of Palanpur emerges as a living protagonist of your book in terms of being a central figure in the story firmly linked to its main characters

And actually, the driver who came to pick me up at the airport had told me I saw you on the Internet. You write books for kids. But Parampur is not for kids. It's a serious book. And we have used humor to really convey strong messages. And one thing is that we never use humor to make fun of villages. Quite the contrary. It is an illustration for a right and brilliantly discovers a culprit that everybody and that is palampur. As a village character

So, talking about the place, I know you mentioned in your reply that you recently visited the place I would love to know about how your experience was and how would you describe the changes you saw in Balanpur? And do you think a story like Rumble in a Village or least some of the happenings in the book, could actually happen in present day Palanpur?

Kids go to school and the school has a teacher who is working is there. Although we made a quick test of the students recently and it revealed that they can still not read. I just also want to add a little thing here about that bulb. It led having only one bulb in the village led to more social interactions. I remember evenings where everybody was together under that bulb. Now we should not idealize that
