The Voice of Nicole Holofcener

article image placeholderNicole Holofcener
Please give such pathos, such beauty, such familiarity. Enough said. And can you ever forgive me? Was the last one I saw that she wrote, which is she co wrote with Jeff Whitty, and she won the award for Writers Guild of America for best adapted screenplay

Industry pro, brilliant storyteller #celeb hello Nicole! Welcome to Swell #swellinterview #DBPconvo

And I was going to write the third part, which is told completely from the female point of view because God knows they can't write a female part to save their lives. So we did it together and it was really fun. We went to France and it's done and I'm not the director, so I don't have a lot of power to have things go my way or to direct the scenes. That how I see them directed

Mutual fans 🍿

I'm wondering if you've ever had a situation where you're like, I love this person, but it's not going to work in my world that you create. That's my first question. Second question is, can you talk about Catherine Keener? Because you have brought her to the screen so many times in such a beautiful way

And I sought her out after seeing her in a movie and tried to get her for walking and talking, which she was immediately game for getting financing with her and the other cast that I wanted to cast because nobody was really famous yet was difficult. And I think that's partly why it took so many years to get the movie made

Talking about love

I'm sure it was stupid, but I'm sure it came from that playful, stupid place that we live in when we're sitting on lawns. And thank you for giving James Gilbertini a place to be before he passed. And a great movie to be in and to be goofy and lovable. But in terms of love and movies, you have this brand of this kind of edgy, cool but extremely vulnerable way of letting us understand that we're all the same person when it comes to love

And I don't think I know anything more than anybody else. That's for sure. It's funny. A lot of the things I write about are issues that I have, but I'm not as clever as my characters or I don't go through the same catharsis as them. Like in Enough, said Julia finally gets it. And I just lost my train of thought because I had to pause. Somebody was talking to me

Sophie Jones! https://youtu.be/YErMAEVdd_g

That made me laugh. No one likes to hear themselves talk, except people that are really into themselves. Okay. I want to talk about Jesse Barr, these two people, both by by the name of Jesse Barr, Jesse Barr and Jesse Barr cousins. And they both lost parents to cancer. And they created this beautiful film called Sophie Jones. And I read about it on Rotten Tomatoes. And there your name was another serendipitous moment. I think it's out

And then maybe I gave her more notes. And then I was giving her advice throughout the process of trying to get it finished. And not that she really needed much. But I did. And then we decided I could be an executive producer. And basically all that really means is that I have my name on her film, which might get it seen more easily. It's a little embarrassing that it's so prominent all over the movie or the end of the movie

Muse / inner critic

You do not to get too woo, but how do you get prepared to be awesome as a creator writer? And how different is that than being a director in terms of the process? I guess there are two points to this question. One is how do you write and bring in the Museum? What do you need to do to get out of your own way?

It took a year to write, and it's been kind of sitting there for six months, and I'm not writing something new. I am trying to write a short film because I haven't directed in a long time and I really miss it. So I have no Sage answers for aspiring writers, except that I don't know if it gets any easier, and I don't know

A question then a pause till whenever ... so good to be in Conversation w/u

And the invitation he gave to all of us and being so vulnerable was sort of just saying, like, we're all just trying to get by before we die. I mean, really, that's it. And I think that quite frankly, that's one of the reasons I love the work you do is I feel like there is a surrender to how f***** up we are in all your movies, especially in Lovely and Amazing. You do that

And just like, I think that about my own mom at this age and her age. So I don't know what I'm saying, but this has been really and I hope that I'm making sense. Thanks. Bye

@cake until we talk about your next project here on Swell!

My questions are buried sometimes because I fumble upon them when I'm thinking so I'm going to get better at front Loading my questions and then fumbling. I wasn't even thinking about you thinking about death, but thanks for the information. God, it was so good to spend time with you here. And La is definitely a place where when you make your little hovel and things are cool, it's just an amazing space to I love it here

@cake thank you for such a wonderfully thought provoking film

So I know in the past it had been brought up the similarities in terms of structure to Akira Kurasawa's Rashimon. And I'm curious to know if the three chapter structure that you had in the film was something that you had sort of always envisioned. And the reason that I asked that is because I found myself being just so completely captivated the entire time, but not just that
