Take a look at this screenshot from this afternoon on CNN. Representative Mike Gallagher was being interviewed by Jake Tapper about banning TikTok in the United States. If you've been following this, you'll know that Senator Rubio, Mike Gallagher, a few others have been sort of leading the charge here against TikTok in the United States, reintroducing the, quote, averting the national threat of internet surveillance, oppressive censorship and influence and algorithmic learning by the Chinese Communist Party Act earlier this year

There are a lot of things in China that just don't fly like they do on American TikTok. And American TikTok can be a dangerous place for child trafficking or human trafficking in general, and bullying and other things that can happen happen on TikTok as can happen on other social media platforms. So, yes, I do believe that TikTok is extremely addictive. I do believe that people feel drawn to being seen, to being acknowledged, to belonging

And I know for myself, example, on Instagram, I was getting the perfect blend, and it was amazing of the content I was getting from science to things that were thoughtful to the silly to the cute little kitties. And then all it takes, really? You like one video that is something different, and the algorithm suddenly bombards you with a bunch of videos around that topic. I have no interest in those things. Generally speaking. It was that one video that I liked

So if you're going to have a discussion, do you need to have a really broad discussion and not just sort of single out one particular application, even though, like I say, I think it's the best app in the world, it's also the worst app in the world. And I think the concerns, especially when it comes to disinformation, but we've seen this already with Facebook and we've seen this too, not so much on Instagram, but also on Twitter and X
