The Swell approach to Information and Moderation

Hello Swellcast. I wanted to take a minute to talk about information on Swell. There is a lot of chatter going on about information and misinformation and how communities have to moderate information. Now Swell is a place for sharing your thoughts, having conversations with a series of fun and we welcome differing perspectives, but we also want to ensure that information on Swell is trustworthy. So I'm recording a series of replies below describing what our process at Swell has been and will continue to be

We discourage the spread of misinformation. We encourage you to moderate your conversations and cite references or provide first hand information.

1. Add links in description to cite references

First, we made it a culture in Swell to generally encourage people to link the sources for what they are quoting in the description of the Swell or reply so others can verify those sources as Swell web. And we've seen most people use this feature in the manner we intended for it. So go ahead and add those links. It generally helps people to be able to verify the information that you're talking about

2. Please moderate conversations you start.

But in case you did not know about this, you can always long press on any reply in a conversation you started and you will see a menu of options, and you can choose to delete that reply if you believe that it does not have a place in your conversation. So please act as the moderation of your own conversation. It's your conversation to moderate, and you have the ability to moderate it in the way you think. Is it easier

3. Report swells for mis information

Finally, our listeners can report swells main swells and replies which get flagged for our Moderation team to review when it does come to us for review and they reason it was reported is misinformation. We look for that reference link in that swell or replies description. If there is no reference or credible journalistic source of reference to validate the information being spoken and we are not able to find one of our own either, then we may delete that swell or reply as we would rather err on the side of caution

A note about first hand accounts!

I just want to say that if the Swell is a personal firsthand account of something, then we leave it to the listener to determine the veracity of what's being spoken based on the credibility of the speaker and the credibility that he has established in the community. I hope that this is useful information. As always, we welcome feedback from our community. Happy spell casting
