Spotlights: The Carbonauts - it’s not a SciFi flick. But it is about the life or death of this planet

Hey, it's Deborah. It's another swell spotlight today. Thought I'd start with some music theory Corporation. Sometimes you have to get into a little vibe before you talk to somebody who kind of blows your mind mind, you know, when you meet people and you say, wow, that guy was ahead of his time. He was always ahead of the curve. Well, today we are going to Lets, lets, lets, lets talk with Graham Hill about his career

Let’s talk with Graham Hill #TED #change https://s.swell.life/SSEXo2WIdBgB9cg #swellinterview #activism #unsungheros #TEDspeaker

But yeah, I'm an entrepreneur, outdoors person. I love the environment, and I am really excited about the possibilities of changing the world for the better. That's what makes it
@spotlight

The differentiator!

Thanks, Graham. Just one note about life edited it's such a head of the time conversation also, and I think it really speaks well and leans into this whole Karbonac conversation. Less is more and our ability to embrace the the trends of just paring down and valuing what you have is such a great mindset. So I'm so pleased that your career sort of trailed you into this. And I want to speak right now to the mechanics of the carbonate

So the mechanics of the carbonates are based around the idea that even if you have awareness and you really care, you've got a busy life. You sit down to lower your footprint, you start digging in, trying to understand what to do and immediately find it very challenging to figure it out because there's a lot of misinformation, specific disinformation, et cetera. So it's hard to figure out what to do in what order
@spotlight

Demographic + expansion

Okay. So people join to do this. And people listening to understand the economics of your program, there is a fee to be a part of your program. Is that true? And if so, what are you seeing in terms of the demographics of people that are adopting your program now? And what's your vision for expanding that demographic

#slidingscale #expandacrossplanet

So the main idea here is that we make this something that works financially and so we can expand it across the planet. We need a lot of people to do these things. The way that it works is there are mission fees we've on with a sliding scale, so it depends on your household income. We just allow people to select their household income and pay appropriately. I also am happy if anyone can't afford it. I'm happy to let them do it free
@spotlight

Documenting this process as a legacy piece

You got cut off there. But I get the gist of this in the sense that it's so important. They say if you don't charge something, people don't value it. And I really believe, especially in the NGO nonprofit space where you're offering such programming and expertise to help people drop in and succeed at something. It's important to have a fee structure, especially if you have a scholarship program

But we are really trying to help people share where they're at and where they're going and what they've done. And so we're trying to be very transparent on that. So we have a pretty good understanding of what's actually happening. And yeah, we only want to do more of that. So there should be some great stories. Certainly we're seeing it. But I just don't have the time or the bandwidth to do much request recording of the specific stories
@spotlight

Philosophy of incremental moves

How do you help people feel successful? And I know it's part of your program. That's why I'm asking. But because you did it so long ago for your personal life, in terms of eating, are you applying some of the same philosophies to the carbon dioxide in terms of don't try to do everything all at once. Here's how you do it. And there's a lot of psychology behind that

#progressnotperfection

And unfortunately, as humans seem to have this concept of fairness, which doesn't really apply to the universe, it might apply person to person, but it doesn't apply to the universe. So it's quite possible that we should be unbelievably aggressive in reducing our footprints, which I don't think that we're going to do
@spotlight

The social network of this?

We know that Zoom is our way to do it right now, but after Zoom is not required and we're able to go out in the world, are you thinking about potting this and making this in real life with sort of the way meetup works, or is this going to always maintain itself as directed Zoom online experience and how expansive is that connect experience be so that it becomes like its own social network

I think also we will do some sort of master class kind of things where people can do it on their own time. That said, I think for most people that won't be as successful in getting them to get the stuff done as the live or the in person would be. I think there's an accountability that comes with other people that's really important to it in terms of a social network
@spotlight

Storytime ...

Before we do that, I want to ask you to can you tell us a story? Because I love stories and a story about a participant in your program. I know it's young, I know it's just started. So anything like just give us a tidbit of a family or an individual that really went through the steps and is now in it. And it's part of one of your missions and is having a great, tangible success because of the way you've set them up for success

So there's constant sort of surprise at just the cool solutions that exist and the ease with which you can take them up. So I'd say those are some great stories. And then hopefully someone will follow us and swell be able to get you a really great story soon
@spotlight

Open to ALL let’s keep on talking about this.

It's actually really exciting to be a part of something that's new by somebody that's had such success over the past, you know, 25 years doing things similar. So I think the carbonates is in good hands. I've like to continue this conversation with people and also we're going to reinvigorate this every couple of months and get in touch with you and find out what's going on. But in the meantime, I think we're all potential members of this program
