Why it's so important girls/women learn that they're autistic… | "The one thing I wish people knew..."

There's a strong correlation between a number of comorbid illnesses and diseases along with autism and in women. When a professional says you can't possibly be autistic because you make eye contact, or you can't possibly be autistic because you have a degree or a romantic partner or children or any of these other ideas, it completely misses the breadth and depth of the spectrum

And here are those links. The first is the Instagram reel, talking about the importance of having the correct map. Again, a bit more trigger warning in that one. And second is this research paper talking about the experiences of late diagnosed women. And parenthetically, although that a lot of this is very much oriented around women, personally, I have met some autistic men who do not fit the white male stereotype and so have fallen through the cracks or missed, been missed diagnosed, et cetera
article image placeholder Jo on Instagram: "Diagnosis has so many people scared. So many parents don’t want to get their kid’s diagnosed cause they’re scared of the label. They don’t want the stigma. Well guess what? If you don’t get them diagnosed, they’re still autistic, only now they don’t know, and now the label they will get is stupid, lazy, too sensitive, too literal, can’t take a joke etc etc etc Driving while looking at the wrong map is so incredibly dangerous. Not only will i hit things i never saw coming, but I’ll also miss some of the incredible things solely built into my special map! Noticing those special extras is so incredibly important for self esteem! Growing up being told you are less than over and over, if you don’t have a great doctor who also told you about the special extras, can really take a toll on one’s self esteem. Knowing there are actually things we really excel at - how we can be so passionate about things that we end up the experts in that field, how we have an incredible memory for facts about the things we find interesting, how our attention to detail trumps most other neurotypes etc these are so incredibly important for a persons self esteem  And on top of guarding one’s mental health, all the other nasty things are so much less likely to affect a person if they can see the potential potholes on their map! Diagnosis is so incredibly important  #Autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #diagnosis #diagnosisisimportant #autisticrelationships #autisticadult #autisticdiagnosis #autisticeating #autisticgifts #autisticsuperpower"

So it's like things have shuffled, and from the outside, all someone sees is, she's more autistic now, she must be trying to fit into this particular box or this label, but instead it's more, I'm unpacking myself, I'm unfurling, I'm blossoming and I'm becoming more truly me
