Why it's so important girls/women learn that they're autistic… | "The one thing I wish people knew..."
There's a strong correlation between a number of comorbid illnesses and diseases along with autism and in women. When a professional says you can't possibly be autistic because you make eye contact, or you can't possibly be autistic because you have a degree or a romantic partner or children or any of these other ideas, it completely misses the breadth and depth of the spectrum
And here are those links. The first is the Instagram reel, talking about the importance of having the correct map. Again, a bit more trigger warning in that one. And second is this research paper talking about the experiences of late diagnosed women. And parenthetically, although that a lot of this is very much oriented around women, personally, I have met some autistic men who do not fit the white male stereotype and so have fallen through the cracks or missed, been missed diagnosed, et cetera
So it's like things have shuffled, and from the outside, all someone sees is, she's more autistic now, she must be trying to fit into this particular box or this label, but instead it's more, I'm unpacking myself, I'm unfurling, I'm blossoming and I'm becoming more truly me

Thanks for that Instagram. That was amazing, and it was very enlightening. Wow. Very enlightening in a scary, scary way, because a lot of those things I didn't even realize were connected. So thank you so much for sharing that with us. Thank you so much
