Brain-Machine Interface Announcement

article image placeholderElon Musk promises demo of a working Neuralink device on Friday
Hey, what's going on? This is Ray with the Raycast. Many of you know, Elon Musk has two most popular companies, Tesla and SpaceX. Elon also has a Neurotech firm called Neurolink. They've announced recently simply that they will demonstrate a working device which many believe to be a brain machine interface. This is going to all happen at 06:00 p.m.. Eastern Time on Friday, August 28. Musk has mentioned it in the past

That's my kid. He's got to wretch. Please. Excuse him. Yes. Thanks, Ray. Tomorrow, six. I'm a tune in. I'm looking at at that picture. It looks like it goes over the ear. Or is it like an implant? I thought it was going to be like some kind of chip implanted in your head, but that looks like a hearing aid kind of thing. Is that how it works?

Poker, man. Thanks for dropping by, man. Yeah, the company seems to be pretty aggressive and ambitious with their research. According to the article, they want to connect to the brain itself, using flexible electric chords, thinner than human hair. They call it threads. So that device you see sitting on the ear is not all of it. There's a part of it that will actually connect to the brain

That's scary, bro. I, man. Think about the phone. We're having problems with all this data collection. Like now they're collecting what brain data. They're collecting your thoughts. They'll know what you're thinking. Like when you're about to commit a crime, they'll be able to see all this, right? They have a main computer where they'll be able to read all your thoughts or share. That's crazy. That's crazy. How

Thank you for this announcement, @Rayga!

Hey Ray, thanks for sharing this announcement. I read about Neuralink a few years ago, and every time Elon comes up with some idea, it always sounds overly ambitious and optimistic, but he seems to deliver fairly often, sometimes maybe taking a little longer than he might like. But it will be interesting to see how this progresses, and I know that I will not be anywhere near the front of the line to sign up for the first one, if ever

@RealPokerMan 😄

Yeah, Pokemon, it is insane. The thing is, it's a brand new technology. Anything that's brand new is gonna seem so far fetched, you know, to actually have a procedure where a diode is implanted in your brain. That's, wow. I remember when LASIK surgery for the eyes first came out. People were like, oh, no, I'm not letting anybody touch my eyes

@SeekingPlumb Agreed!

I think SpaceX was a huge success, and I think he'll do something great with Neuralink, but it still remains to be seen, because now we're dealing with a brand new area where a procedure to actually connect to the brain. That's just amazing to be just thinking about it. But we will see I'm looking forward to seeing what he has to say or hearing what he has to say. And I guess the conversation will continue. Thanks again. Have a great day

But allowing unrestricted development of something like this, where the goal is to be able to upload and store thoughts. I have a very bad feeling about this. For all we know, this could be the next nuclear bomb that we are helping build and think that was a mistake. Whatever people may say about tech, I think the nuclear bomb should not have been built. And similarly, there are some aspects to tech that I think we should stay away from

And another device will pick up that activity in real time and show you what's happening in the brain. And in the future, he hopes to make that sort of merge machines and humans so that we man control machines with our brains. So it's pretty complex, but it's really interesting stuff. And as you said, technology is moving at the speed of light. We've seen some exponential growth in the last 50, 60 years, and it's just going to continue

So Musk's vision, I think, is also to find a way to connect our brains to machines so that we can control machines rather than them controlling us. So I'm sure ethics and artificial intelligence is being taken seriously out there as it should and being discussed as well. In fact, I'm posting a link. This was an open letter published by a group called the Future of Life Institute

I would like to chime in here a little bit. I would recommend to everybody that's on this swell that you get the book called Enough by Bill McKibben, that he talks about all of this type of stuff that's going on and their plans for this type of technology. And I think a lot of you will probably be shocked. So I recommend, please go get that book, Bill McKibben, Enough by Bill McKibben

And anyway, my camera turned on all of a sudden, instead of seeing a pool party, I'm looking at myself on my phone, like my face popped up on the screen, and I'm like, what the f***? This dude turned on my f****** camera. He hacked my camera on that website. That Fidelity pool party bullshit

Yeah, I would highly recommend it. Poker Man. Definitely get it and thoroughly read it. And you'll probably have to read it more than once or twice or three times like I did. But you'll you'll see that this has been a plan of theirs for a very long time and you'll see what the end game and their end goal is for this. So yeah, as soon as you can and check that book out. And I would definitely recommend commended for everybody listening to this

Mtoire thank you so much for the book recommendation. I'm always fascinated by the pros and the cons of emerging technology, especially the cons. It keeps me in the know of what's really going on. So yes, definitely. I'm going to Amazon right now to check out your recommendation. Thanks again

In fact, to see an elevator operator would be weird. We would then worry that the elevator was too antiquated, too old for us to use it. So I don't know. I always think about this kind of stuff when it comes to tech. We're here, we're freaking out. But at some point down the road to do anything any other way would seem ridiculous to future generations. And I think that's probably what we're witnessing here. The first steps towards something like that

I love this idea. I think of all the possibilities you could actually do if you were to be able to beam your consciousness into an Android body, you could just do anything without fear. Sex, without risk of disease. You jump off a cliff without risk of death. Anything. I just think it sucks that none of us will probably be around to ever see this happen if it ever does happen, but pretty cool Nevertheless

And they talked about that extensively in that book about transferring consciousness straight into computers or something else like that. To me, that's making a big assumption that's just assuming that we're going to either have computers or a power source to power the computers up forever or for the next 1000 years. S***. What happens if you put your consciousness in the computer and then the f****** power goes out? You're stuck

So there's a lot of features I think that are going to have to be implemented in the algorithm and the machine learning systems of autonomous vehicles before the reality can be realized. And for these cars to get out on the open roads safely. But it's interesting. It's moving rapidly and there's been a lot of advances. It will be interesting to see how things develop, but thanks again for your input. Talk to you later. Bye

Yes, I agree. Gentlemen. We're living in the beginning stages of what will be an unimaginable future, perhaps one we will not even experience in our lifetime. But, yes, it's you're going to be interesting if you haven't already done. So there's a program television series called Black Mirror on Netflix. It's a science fiction anthology that examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies

@Rayga AI scares Elon

Ray, I know back in 2018, Elon was scared by AI Yaki said AI scares the h*** out of me. And I think he was interviewed by Kara Swisher and she was asking him about the biggest challenges to his company or to his fortune or to the landscape in general. And he replied, AI not just the biggest challenge, but perhaps in terms of technology, but perhaps the biggest challenge in terms of the actual destruction and disruption it could brings to humanity

But his prediction of this fast paced advances in AI marks a significant revision of previous estimations of the so called technological singularity. As you know, the singularity is when machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence and accelerate at an incomprehensible exponential rate. So it remains to be seen. It's going to be interesting to see how we move forward. In fact, gentleman by the name of Ray Kurzweil, previously pegged this superintelligence tipping point that singularity at around 2045

@Rayga Goodreads? AI authors? First Thursdays?

Yeah, I'm over on Goodreads. You can see the stuff on my shelf. I bought two books last night to continue deep reads with authors who I respect from articles they posted in The Guardian or New Scientist or Psychology Today or The Atlantic. Yeah. Some of the titles would be a second nature to you. You would have seen the stuff, read the cliff notes and think don't need that. But I'm going down the rabbit hole of AI

But other than those books and maybe a few others that I'm not recalling right now, I spent a lot of time reading the news on artificial intelligence, so I stay posted on what's currently happening in the space, so I can stay apprised of the development. And I think that's the best way for me to really dig into the ideas of artificial intelligence is to really read about the current experiments. Youtube has excellent information on there as well, where there's a lot of discussions about robotics

So that book was published in 20 17, 50 different editions. Max Tegmark and I have it marked as one to read. So now on the back of this conversation, I'll elevate that to top of my Kindle. I guess because as I mentioned, AI has to fit in to my next semester in a module I teach with very senior students, creatives animators and game art designers, and AI needs to be in their crosshairs about what the world is in the near term

We are awakening it, but we hadn't awakened it to the fullest is what my understanding is. So, yes, it's going to be interesting to see how this interface with our third eye and maintains almost superhuman what we're going to be able to do. We're at a stage now that anything is possible and people are looking for something to believe in, someone to believe in, anything to believe in because of the way the world is and how things are
