What happened to our movie stars?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MrBingo
I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. This is more of like an observation. I don't know if it's a rant or a confession. We're going to go with observation. But there was a time many, many, many, many moons ago, that the thought of somebody on film was a big star and a big movie was rather iconic

Hey, it's JL. I don't know. On a level, I believe that movie stars were doing this even air quotation back then. The difference is that we have so much access to theo virtually, virtually now in terms of social media and gossip outlets and paparazzi being able to follow them at a level that was maybe a little different back in the day in terms of paparazzi getting paid off to film them living

@MrBingo

They had the largest piles of cash of money, right? Which meant then they could do things in a different way. Bigger movie houses had bigger budgets and so they might have bigger movies bringing in more money. And it was sort of this perpetual motion machine. And when things run like that, I don't think we realize sometimes all of the interwoven systems that there are within society

But I think we just got bored of paparazzi following these celebrities because most actors and actresses, they do not want their personal businesses theo do not want their personal business out there. These new celebrities, I shouldn't say these new celebrities, but reality stars, they want to make a profit by putting out their own personal business. And also, when it comes to superstars, these movie stars, a lot of movie stars are now transitioning into the TV world. Now they're doing TV shows

I remember a time the thought of having a 200 million dollar movie be released directly to someone's home was like, well, first of all, it it didn't connect. Nobody was going to spend that kind of money for, you know, just here you go. You know, almost kind of serving it up for free, if you think about it. But for it to be in a streaming service, $200 million was like blockbuster, like only blockbuster

That's where they're getting the vast majority of their money. I don't know how the heck Anthony Hopkins ended up in that movie. The only thing I can figure is that he had some kind of deal behind closed doors that if he did the last night, he could do Westworld or whatever it was. Somehow he ended up in that movie contractually, because there's no way he signed up for that movie on purpose because it is not in his area of expertise. It's a terrible movie

Actors aren’t as mysterious as they once were

A lot of times, you're talking about people that fake being other people for a living, and there's very few of them I respect at all at this point. Most of them are sellouts. There was a friend of mine years ago I used to work with, and he said he's like, these celebrities are the court gestures. And when the king says dance, you dance. And theo, when the king says sit down, you sit down

And you want to see get all the predicaments they're in. But in the case of a lot of reality TV, a lot of this stuff not all, but a lot of this stuff is about people who are rich and have wealth in some cases and are in these positions to where it's like, swell, we're looking in on their lives. But are they relatable? And I don't have anything Against Them personally, because Obviously I don't know them personally

You have San Diego, Comic Con, and they're barely about comics now at this point because you have the Lifetime Channel that has a booth that represents there. And then all these other places have now built Comic Con followers. All these cities, salt Lake, where I'm from or where I'm at, I'm from Hawaii. But they have FanX every year, and we get actors, actresses, creators, stars, what have you from one end of the spectrum to the other

Hey, it's Theo. Thank you so much for chiming in. And you make a good point. With the foreign film market, and especially with China, it comes down to money and numbers, and they all go hand in hand because in the case of the foreign market, china is the biggest one just by sheer population. And I've seen, you know, blockbusters who haven't had their movies debut in China

@MrBingo : mystique is inversely proprietary to consumption

Hey there. Just stumble upon this well, great conversation. A couple of things to add to the conversation. One is we are consuming content like we've never done before. Earlier the modes of entertainment were limited and so as a recreational outlet people would go and watch movies so it did not require exhaustion amount of advertising and reach and what have you

Second point is it's not just the financing in china and the kind of global financing It's the industry's focus on brand and intellectual property. So much of the movies being produced now is in a cinematic universe or is recycling content from a TV show or a video game or a movie that's come out before that. The business itself doesn't care about the talent. You can pluck out actor A and plug in person B because there's so much CGI, it kind of doesn't matter

But there was a time, roughly ten or so years, where Hollywood remade everything, and I mean everything. House on Haunted Hill, house of Wax, the Crazies, there was, and that's still being worked on, but a remake of Escape from New York, a great Kurt Russell movie that I enjoy. But Hollywood has never shied away from the fact that they like, quote, unquote, sure things as best as humanly possible

And he's really held on to the whole go to a movie theater to see this kind of thing. And both sides of it have their good points as well as bad points. But for people who've kind of seen it coming, harrison Ford being one of them, they just lean into it. It's like, this is the future of entertainment, or this is where I'm at, so why not be a part of it?

Its a swing in history

When someone brings up like wrestling, for example, you think the WWE, but it's not even like World Wrestling Entertainment. I'm going to focus on the name of this company. It's like a corporate focus instead of the focus on the star, which is what is pushed out by Hollywood and that's its own swell by itself as to what Hollywood is. How did it start? How hollywood has its ties to ancient black magic and ice white shut movie type rituals
