What did your parents get right?

We were, of course, encouraged to eat healthy, but no diets, no diets were pushed down on us, or there were no comments passed on how much I ate or when I ate or how I ate. No food was off limits, but junk food portions were strictly monitored. Yet again, something a lesson that I have learnt from her, which I still implement. I've seen a lot of people close to me carry this baggage of terrible body image issues right from their childhood

Ramia. It's so great to hear this message. First of all, Congratulations to your parents. That is a milestone. It's so wonderful to also hear you as a mom, talk about the benevolence of your mom and how that affects the way you parent and the generosity you give your kids to not poke and pick. And I'm sure it's challenging as yours. Go on. It's even more challenging

And she said, you raised a really nice young man. When I got here, I was having trouble with the door and he jumped up and came to my rescue. And she went on to say, like how kind of a gesture it was. Yada, yada, yada. And I think it's those moments that we need to look to our parents and say, thank you

So you would have to go and immerse yourself in that community, and that can be expensive and timely. And people need to work and support the family. So I think that this is a really key piece of understanding my upbringing and reflection. So thank you for posting this topic

Life lessons

It took me a long time, and I didn't understand it until I was a grown, grown a** man. So the thing my mom gave me the most I would say, is confidence. She always told me, believe in yourself. She always believed in everything about me. She's my biggest cheerleader, and she just taught me, just have confidence in yourself and don't take no s*** from nobody. Don't start nothing but don't take none either

One thing that my caretakers got right was that they tried their best to paint a vivid picture for me about how lethal and arduous it was going to be for me as a black male in America. Unfortunately, that picture comes with snuffing out a lot of hopes along the way about the potential love, other people that you want to believe in, but who consistently in very intricate ways, remind you that you do not belong
