And while I was thankful to have her to turn to for support, I think I did not give much weight to her words, for they were easy to overlook given my age back then and my incessant search for external validation as I was building my career. For a while, every word of praise from a boss or a colleague was a big shot in the arm for me to push myself harder

I think even as a student she used to advise me and my sister to exercise frugality. And, you know, I always kind of shrugged my shoulders at it and said, money is a two tool for me
