What does it mean to be an author?

article image placeholderCreating
Hey, guys, this is my first swell cast on my channel. I'm coming to you today with the question, what does it mean to be an author? And the reason I ask this question is because I've never really seen my myself as an author or a writer. And it's kind of funny because even after writing a book, I still don't feel like an author

So I definitely don't feel like I'm an author, but I'm a creator. Sure. I'm an artist. Yeah. So whatever you feel like or whatever anyone feels like is best at expressing these really concept actions. I feel like works. Who's to say what is right and wrong? It's yours. It's your art. It's what you're creating. So you call it, and you call yourself whatever feels best for you

Creating vs Inspired Mimicry both of which produce beautiful works of art

And then going from the art world into writing a book where you don't have pictures to express something nonverbal, and you have to pick the right words to paint a perfect picture in the mind of a reader. So in a sense, I'm recreating a memory without creating something new. And yet because it's specific to my memory, I am creating something new for the reader entirely. I don't know. It's really cool to think about

When does a cup become a mug?

I guess even though I write and I've been published in some anthologies and I'm working on my book, this conversation is making me realize that I don't think I've ever felt like I could call myself or think of myself as an author until my first novel is published somewhere I'm really proud of. And then also like I have another books in the works, which seems pretty arbitrary now because I've always felt comfortable calling myself a writer

@bowie defining words, moments and associations

Hey, Bowie, that's a really, really good point you make when you say you don't think you could consider yourself an author until you get your first novel published somewhere that you're really proud of and also have another book in the working. It begs the question of how we define ourselves as far as the words that we use. Like you said, it's interesting. The term writer is almost synonymous with an action of doing

@NicoNico Creating outside the market

A writer that I came into contact with who has left the most impact on me, actually is someone who writes regularly and beautifully, and she keeps all of her writing in a box beneath her bed. She doesn't want to share it. She's not sure if she'll ever publish it right now. She's keeping it for herself because it's not about the markers of success associated with the writing world
