How synthesizers from the 80’s hid in the cultural conscience for 30+ years and re-emerged with the rise of modern computer tech as Outrun/Synthwave

article image placeholderOutrun
So I thought this would be kind of a fun post because I'm not into 80s music, nor am I into electronic music. However, I just discovered I am into something called Outrun, which is kind of the modern state of 80s era synthesizer driven music. And I don't know why I like it because I don't really like the 80s, and I don't really like electronic music

#synth, #outrun, #syntywave, #80’s

Connor great post. I sort of remember the exact moment that synth wave, at least in my life, started making a comeback, if you will, although it's definitely like a newer thing, like you mentioned reemerged. But when the movie Drive came out and the Kaminsky track Night Call came out, that was the moment where I was like, oh, you know, this sort of genre is going to get pretty big

Drive

And I'm curious if you've delved more into the way in which a lot of these songs are being used in movies and other media because from the little bit of reading I was doing because I was excited by what you posted, it seems like a lot of this music is inspired by soundtracks from horror movies and different kinds of things from the 80s

@bowie I think you’re talking about Kavinsky

Bowie. I'm not Connor, but I just wanted to answer your question. The group was Kavinsky from the movie Drive. I linked it just above, but you may have missed it, but that was the song that was like, literally everywhere, even in Target. At the time I heard the song, it was just crazy

And I'm wondering if other than Stranger Things you've seen or experienced anything in the media that seems to be playing with this. It's actually interesting because since we have this other conversation going on with Cobra Kai, and I feel like there's some overlap of the time period. Right. And I'm kind of surprised I don't feel like they really leaned into any of that kind of feeling in the show when it comes to fence, it's more than, like, 80s rock and stuff
