Paypal, Afterpay, Klarna got us in a chokehold

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
Is it getting to the point now where we're just buying now, paying later for everything, even the stuff that we can afford? Are we taking it as an easy way to buy something without having to put up the money up front? Are these things really getting our bank accounts, our money and our finances all tangled up because we got all these payments coming out? What do you say, swellcast? What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for listening

Never saw one thing that even resembled anything financial literacy related. So appreciate you bringing this to the table. I'm looking forward to hearing from other people, and if they have a similar experience to the one you and I have had

And so it's a win win for the company that can find a solution to get us to commit in these bite size increments, right. Because the decision that we're making, we see it as so much more advantageous for us to do so. And I would go forth to say that it can be advantageous. For instance, social media

They don't seem like much. Or even a dollar 99, they don't seem like much. But when you add up 1020 apps and they each have a different pay date, you're having money taken out, just more money. And then you have to ask yourself, do I need to have 1020 entertainment apps? Because it can catch up to us. And I just learned about Afterpay because I actually have my own shop, my own store online called Third Heaven Designs

But I do think that they are an option for people who don't have good credit or whatever because I know a lot of people, well actually they do use your credit. I forgot they do go up on your credit. Depends upon what limit that you have. But they will raise their limit. I have not used one of mine and I got like 2000 some dollars that I can put out at a time on there

We believe a few more dollars is what's standing in the way of us getting to that place of true fulfillment. And so a lot of folks just aren't really interested in becoming more financially literate. They just believe more money fixes it all. But like you said, we need to get to a place where we start becoming more knowledgeable about money and how it works, because money is a tool. And so we need to learn and understand how it works

So, yes, the retailers understand that there's a benefit in it for them as well, because now we can sell more merchandise to people who are willing to pay those bite size commitments, like you said. And to us, it doesn't seem like you said a big obligation anymore, because I'm only paying a little bit here and a little bit there. But then with credit in general, like you said, it's been around forever

It's a loan. They're paying it on your behalf and you're paying them back. So it's a loan, and it can definitely get you down the rabbit hole if you're not careful. Now, doing one thing at a time is good, but to do five or six at a time just because you can is not good. It's not good. And so I know one of my biggest goals in 2024 is to become a much better financial steward

But like you said, one at a time and then using them sparingly, not every time I order something, I do a pay and for I don't have to do after pay for everything that I buy online. If I've got the money, I need to go ahead and pay the money. Pay the money up front. Go ahead, satisfy it. It's done. I ain't got to pay for it again

So, yeah, I think if you're good with your money and you know how to manage your money well and you know the game, you're not going to fall into a trap with these people. It does have some benefit to you. I've also noticed that Visa and Mastercard and all those guys, they see what's going on, so now they're offering their kind of their pay in advance and they kind of offering the same thing, but it's through the credit card
