Mom Gives Perfect Response to the Media: We Didn’t All Come From Struggle

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
You've got young men coming from all over the country to be a part of this life changing event, because it's definitely a life change going from a college athlete to a professional athlete. So there was one athlete, his name was Brian Thomas Junior, and he was selected to. I forgot which team he was selected to. But they, of course, always interview the parents after the child is selected

And it's really lazy reporting on the reporters part to go there instead of just doing a little bit of, you know, just a little bit of research on this guy to really find out what his story is. Now, I understand that the reporter may not have had enough time, but again, can't make this. The reporter can't make the assumption about where the kid came from. And, you know, we love storylines. We love underdog stories in the media

Every black person don't have a struggle story. But I think what's going on is that the media see these struggle stories a lot. I mean, given the history of black people in America, we do see that often and see it a lot. And unfortunately, the media sharks are going to try to devour that more than just a nice, normal story of someone who likes football from a family, a black family that has money and who are well to do

It's just my nature. And so they interviewed me and they edited it. And so when it showed, I said on the air that I appreciate them giving us this packet of work so that we can keep our kids busy and be engaged so he doesn't fall behind. They edited it where I was like, oh, I'm thankful for the lunch

But two college educated parents, yeah, you might let your son play football, play professionals, play sports in college, but are we really going to push the NFL to him as his way to success? That's usually. That's not a very likely path to success. So many of these guys that are drafted will never see real game time. They'll never be, you know, like the infamous OJ Simpson

@richtaliaferro

Your story is not as interesting as the one that grew up in foster care. Your story is not as interesting as the ones who had to, you know, sell the family car so they could put their child in AAU or something. You know, it's like, okay, well, I'm talking talented, too, you know? I mean, shouldn't the blessing be that I didn't have to go through that?

@HeyItsErica

Hey, Erica, thank you so much for your response. I agree with everything you said. And another thing is, if you do have, like, a pretty normal background, the media will try to manipulate or twist things in your story to make you think that. Wait a minute. Maybe you didn't have as good as you thought you did. Maybe there was some struggle. Like, we're going to try to find some struggle even though there wasn't any

She ended up repenting for allowing that stuff to be edited out. And I know that it wasn't 100% within her control. They gave her a platform, she used the platform, but it wasn't her tv station. It wasn't her production company. It wasn't. She didn't have that kind of control. They allowed her to book guests and to create topics to discuss. I mean, that was pretty much the extent of her show

I also agree with you on the kids that feel like, okay, I made it out, now I got to buy my mom a house. Now. I don't know if these athletes necessarily feel pressure. I don't know if they're, like, encouraged, I would say, by their agents or people around them to do that for their families or if this is something they want to do

But I would have loved to have bought that house. I had it all in my head. Like the scenario, I was going to bring my mother to the house, show her the house and say, mom, look at the house. Isn't it beautiful? You know, I just wanted to show it to you and then before we left, but, oh, by the way, here's the key. Is your house

Low Expectation Barriers

The minority impact celebrating the happy stories and this assumption that it is a negative story is it shows the need for diversity of thought and diversity of experience within the media and within every table, for that matter. It's a news station that does not have that diversity of thought. She clearly, you know, cannot cover everything. She's going by memory, knowledge, or what was dished to her. It's very interesting
