#AskSwell | When dining with a group, how do we split the check?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
Or if someone ordered a more expensive entree, got drinks, ordered dessert, if they have the more expensive tab, should they be responsible for what they spent? Should I have to pay more to cover the extra that they spent at the restaurant? If I'm working within a budget, do I let everyone know, hey, you guys, I have $30 and that's all I got? Or should one person pick up the whole tab and then we just reimburse them the difference?

This can get dicey! #food #friends #money #foodie #askswell #swelltuesday

I went out with one of my girlfriends the other day. She took care of the bill. We fought for the bill, if you will. That happens. $22 breakfast bill. Usually somebody's going to pay that. We are not going to nickel and dime. Literally a two person meal, right? I've taken care of the bill for people. I won't do that so much now, not even being cheap

Because he gave me some I wanted coffee. He's giving me some cafe because that's how they get down like that. I was like, I don't have a shame in asking, is this included? Because I'm spending at that point, that was like a week's worth of groceries spent on one meal. So, yes, I need to know. I'm sure there's etiquette that says don't ever do that

Maybe this isn't our season to be going out to dinner every Thursday or whatever. Maybe we need to sit this out a couple of times a month and just go a few times month and let it be so. Thank you so much just for your input

I could still do that today because I don't cook on Sundays for myself, typically. Normally I go out and grab something after church and bring it home. So eating out on the weekend is not a big deal, but we used to go crazy with it, and sometimes we'd be eating out like two and three days a week, and that gets expensive. But of course, this was before inflation had a chokehold on this economy, and so things were a lot more affordable back then too

Like, whatever you order, that's what you're paying for. Unless I specifically say, like, come on, let me take you out, then I'm paying for everything. But if that's not specifically said, then, yeah, everybody pays for their own food. Whatever you get, you pay for it. Now, if I'm out with my pastor, it's a fight for the bill, because if he get the bill first, he going to pay for everybody

It. So if I go out with a group of friends, I'm not expecting them to cover what I eat. I ask for my own check and pay and tip off my check, not everybody else's. I'm not worried about what everybody else does. Like I said, I ask for mine separately. I pay and tip off of my check amount. That's how I do it

I'm like, yeah, it really helps to save time, and it also helps you. Well, it was my birthday dinner, so I didn't have to pay for it, but it gave me an idea of what the prices were so I would know how much was going to be spent. But, yeah, there are things that we kind of do to be proactive so that when we're out to eat, we're not caught off guard or we're not caught looking crazy or whatever

Hey, Travis, thank you so much for your input. I love your advice. It's simple, straightforward, and makes complete sense. And it eliminates any misunderstandings or any unmet expectations or what have you. Just give me my bill for what I got, and I will take care of me. And I'll take care of my tip. Nuff said. Thank you so much

Enjoy. Yes, ma'am. That is it. We don't need to overcomplicate anything. If I eat, I pay for what I eat. I tip for what I eat, and we go. So thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Bye

Whenever I grow out with my friend group, we don't split the bill into equal part. We pay for our own meals. Because if one of us has eaten a more expensive meal, it's not fair to the others to pay more and for that person to pay less. So I think the most efficient way to split the bill is to definitely pay for your own bill discount

So I made the decision to pay for myself. And so, yeah, it just keeps down a lot of confusion, and it just makes things so much easier when you just look, she going to pay for what she ordered. He going to pay for what he ordered. I'm going to pay for what I order. And we can split the tip, or we can all get the same amount, whatever for the tip, depending on how the waitress is

Hey, SIS. Yeah, I think it really just depends. Like you said, I know for me, if I'm going out to eat with a group of people that I'm super close with or super close to, I might not have a problem splitting it evenly. I most likely am going to be cool with that. Yeah. Unless, of course, I barely ate anything, that's a whole different thing. But for the most part, I'm good with that
