Are Marriage Licenses Truly Necessary?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
Why does the state get to govern the way I marry? Dollars. So swell cast family, what do you think? Do we need marriage licenses at all? Can we just have a nice, pretty certificate framed in our household telling everybody we are indeed married? Or does the court need documentation of our marriage? What do you think?

In the modern age, we have health benefits, life insurance, wills, and last statements of where we want our money and assets to go after we pass, and the marriage certificate and the marriage license and our agreements with the state guarantee spouses and children and family certain things. And just like in your example, one person had a license from a governing authority, and that would be the state that they were married in

I don't know that much about marriage, obviously, but yeah, I could see that the government had incentivized folks to get married under the sanction of the state and federally recognized, and you can get more perks and benefits as a result. Honestly, I don't see myself getting married. I attempted to one time got turned down, and I guess I could have got married with some women if I wanted to, but something about it just feels unnecessary

And then, of course, with common law, there's always those provisions there with common law marriages where the people didn't actually make a covenant to be married, but they've been living together for seven years now, and they've got children together. And so the state has just decided, you are married in our eyes, even though you have not gone through the process to be married. So, yeah, I think some people don't really stop to think about it

It's just that the state gets to regulate my marriage. It's like my marriage is not legit until the State of Virginia says it's legit, no matter what vows and what contract I entered in with my spouse, as far as the promise to love them till one of us departs by death, to love them, to honor them, to cherish them, all those things. And now the state gets to have control over that, in a sense, by giving me permission to get married

They just grab the marriage license, fill out the form, get the get the minister, assign it, or get the justice of the Peace assign it, whomever, and then turn it back in. And that's that. But I agree with you. If you make a covenant with your spouse, then that covenant is still valid. Even if the state doesn't recognize your marriage, I believe it's still a valid covenant. So thank you so much for your response

A single person gets different benefits from WIC and Snap than a married couple, and there's tax breaks for married people with children. So there is such a whole world of legality. On the other hand, I think you're absolutely correct. The vows you take standing in a church are completely different than the promise you make by signing a paper at the court. So, dude, what a great discussion. Is good to hear from

This is a very thought provoking topic. Thank you for inviting me. I didn't respond earlier because I really wanted to take a take a moment and think about it and really think about the question and really think about how I felt. And honestly, I went back to the days when, you know, back in the Bible times, they didn't have a marriage license or a marriage certificate. You know, they did it. They didn't have one back then

I don't just think about that, right? Because if that's all we're thinking about is just, I love you and you love me, let's just be together, and let's just hope for the best, then maybe the marriage license isn't right. Maybe the marriage license isn't

Ah, girl. The state wants people to have marriage licenses because it's a whole racket. It is a whole racket and scheme for them to increase revenue for the state. It's also and I'm certain on a larger scale that I just cannot even fathom some level of tracking and order. There's something else to it. Okay?

Hey, good morning. Happy Monday. So, you know, I never really thought about these things, and when you post, it makes me help me to think about things I wouldn't normally think about marriage license versus marriage certificate. Like you said, it's just illegal. You know, the marriage license is just illegal

If it's not the formal vows that are normally taken, your own self written vows, what you promise to do in the marriage and what have you, why can't you do that? Why does it have to be a license that the state issues to marry couples? And so, yeah, it's amazing to me that some of the contradictions we see and in our justice system, our legal system but thank you so, so much for your response

It doesn't come easy. So they look at a license as something that's more legit than a certification. And I guess that's the way the state looks at marriage licenses. Like, okay, you have a license. We know you are legitimately married versus you just saying, hey, I'm married. We made an agreement. We made a promise. Our family was there when we did it, and so we're married

So it makes sense why we have license, but I guess we can I guess a certificate wouldn't make any difference, but Fight Oreo pretty much stated that a license is much more has much more power, much more authority. It's more of a permission. You are being given permission to get married by the government. And the government loves to give out license. They don't do certificates. But yeah, I feel personally that if you want to get married, get married
