#AskSwell Can You be Overweight And Healthy?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
And I know she weighs at least 300 pounds, but she is helping other people to get healthy, but she is not the picture of what healthy looks like to most people. So that's why I want to ask the question, can we be overweight and still be healthy? Does our weight really create problems and barriers in us obtaining good health? Now, we know that carrying excess amounts of weight can put a lot of pressure on your joints. Even football players mentioned this

Does weight really affect our health?

So a person of five foot two like myself, if I'm over 131, 35, I'm considered going in the direction of obesity now on my frame might not even look like that. Right. And health wise, I'm still fine. But it is just to say that when you define overweight, you have to consider that people are doing that based upon the body mass index, and that's not necessarily ideal. I personally am five foot two. Right

So part two is you can be overweight and be unhealthy. Right. Here's where weight on the body can be an unhealthy thing, as you described. As you gain more body fat, visceral fat, it has an effect on the overall structure of the body. Right? So, yes, you could have a 300 pound on football player. I think that's defensive line don't get me started. I do not know sports like that. Not that sports

So these are some of the things that people, when we're looking at people yes, they can be overweight by body mass index and be healthy. They could be carrying their body weight differently because of their body structure. They have activities that contribute to a healthy inside body, even though their outside body may not look that great or to the eye. Right. To other people and what they're eating and what they're taking into their body is contributing to how healthy they can be

He just carries a lot of weight and needs to lose weight for his own well being because he also sings a lot. So, yeah, there are no absolutes when it comes to weight contributing to health issues because everybody's different. But thank you for chiming in

I was very much so in danger when it came to just being myself and staying true to myself. And once I started committing to eating better and doing more things and the weight started coming off, so did that intense pressure that I was placing on myself and the sadness and all of these other things that were contributing to my overall health. I think many of us know people that are incredibly overweight and seem to have really good lives and live long lives

They're like, you need to take her step class. Who. She wears you out. I was like, there's no way when I tell you I took this woman's step class, and I felt like I lost my left lung, all of my oxygen. I felt like I needed an oxygen tank afterwards. I was sore for days afterwards. I could not keep up with this woman. And that was my eye opener, that you could be any size and be healthy

@Taylor

Hey, Taylor, thank you so much for chiming in. First of all, congratulations on losing 100 pounds. That is a tremendous feat in itself, and I celebrate you. That is an amazing amount of weight loss. And, yes, you are right. It can certainly make you feel bad about yourself. Overall, when you carry a lot of weight, you just don't feel confident

I never wanted to be someone who lost a lot of weight but was flabby and still did not look like you're in shape because you're flabby. You lost weight because you ate 1200 calories a day, but you're flabby. So I always wanted to implement both diet and fitness in my weight loss journey, because both of them are so important. The nutrition is even more important, but both of them are very important if you want to get to the ideal body you're looking for

Overweight is not a lifestyle. Its an early death sentence

He's never been overweight, to my knowledge, and shout out to Taylor for losing 100 pounds. I mean, that's really difficult. That's crazy. But I think yeah. I'm not saying that people should be fashioned at all, but at some point in your life, you will look in the mirror and go, I got to straighten things up

I thank you so much for chiming in fateslicer. I appreciate your opinion. I agree with you. We should not normalize obesity. We should not normalize it. And you're right, there are doctors that don't say anything. I mean, I've never had my doctor say anything about my weight being an issue, and my weight has always been an issue when I've gone to see my doctor. And he's never said anything about my weight

But again, eating the proper nutrition along with the working out, ideally would reduce some of the perceived weight that we are seeing. But this is a very interesting topic and I salute anyone who's in the gym, overweight or not. I believe making the choice to get out of bed and leave your home or get out of your bed to work out is a win. So let's have more of these discussions. Let's continue to support each other

@JustBreath

So I do commend people that are heavy and are getting in the gym and doing the best they can, even if it's only ten minutes on the treadmill, or even if it's just a few lightweight reps with the weights or something, at least they're trying. And even if they do have to modify their exercises for the time being, at least they're trying. At least they're not giving up and saying, I can't do this
