Cult Classic Donnie Darko What are your overall thoughts about the film and the ending specifically?

Hey there. Over the weekend I introduced a friend to Donny Darko. For me, it was like the 7th or 8th time watching it, and I wanted to just take a moment to reflect on why I like this movie so much, much and why it has such a high score on IMDb. I think the last time I checked it was like an eight out of ten. It is quite a Polarizing movie. It seems like people either love it or hate it or are just totally mystified by it

And I rented it and I saw it on DVD. And I've always enjoyed that film. I was blown away by it. Fantastic soundtrack, unique story production value is very high. It's very cohesive. And like I said, with very deep meaning. And basically what I got out of Donny Darko is the choice between fear and love

I guess those two interpretations at least come down to whether the viewer believes in the free will of the characters or whether things have to be the way that they are. So like you said, there's just so many different layers of meaning to the movies, so many different philosophical and theological conversations that could be had about it. Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite scene from the film and have you seen the directors cut? If so, do you prefer it or the original film more

It's called The Machinist, and it has Christian Bale in it. But cheers to you on a great post. And Donnie Darko is definitely up there in one of the best Sci-Fi thrillers within the past 20 years

@NealD @Riddhima - thank you, will look up Machinist and Alchemist!

But what I think what was helpful for me was that the first time I saw it, I'm pretty sure I saw the director's cut, and it wasn't until I saw the regular version. A couple of times after that, I knew what was different. And the director's cut actually has more snippets from the book about time travel that Donnie reads that's written by The Burden of Bureau Lady who lives in the town and walks back and forth to the mailbox
