Why would a university cancel all their clubs in order to keep out an LGBTQ club?

article image placeholderYeshiva University cancels all clubs after it was ordered to allow an LGBTQ group
There's a troubling story in the news that I wanted to bring up here on the Moment magazine's. Wellcast, since the Moment magazine is so skilled at gathering people to discuss issues that directly affect the Jewish people in in the Diaspora and here in the States, in Israel. And this conversation has to do with absolute homophobia. It's just an egregious representation of closed mindedness and of fear and of lack of understanding and of compassion and humanity

Yeshiva University gets an F for compassion. https://s.swell.life/STHzi3lreynjIBh

But again, if one is going to a private faith based university, I can imagine there's been a lot of talk even about the clubs, if they were when they were in to be a little chatter about was it right or not, et cetera. I am not Jewish, I went to college. I almost feel like I shouldn't be speaking on the matter, but this seems to be more just indicative of the nature of faith based organizations

Hey, Dewuan, thank you for your thoughtful response. I can always count on you for digging in and being honest, and you're absolutely right. I think what's most disturbing is when we do have choice as a private institution or private club, you want those choices to reflect just goodness and fairness. But you're right. Private organizations don't want the government in their space, and we haven't seen a lot of good results from that

Why else would you do what you do in the name of law, order or whatever you want to put a label on it? It's just opening up a very dark period in our time where we are really who's to say what? And we're letting institutions and the government and people in general, society and the community dictate our lives, and that's not what we are now

It's just that I'm at the hospital with my son. Sorry, I had to press pause for a minute to wait for the alarm to go off. But Jewish religion, to my understanding and to me reading the Bible, I do the Bible every year. I have Bible study for a whole year. So based on the laws that was in the Old Testament, they do everything in their power to obtain and stand for those laws to the best of their ability

I hate to see the back and forth to who's right and who's wrong and why they can't be this way. Okay. My truthful, honest opinion is Jewish religion. They are standing by their beliefs, their faith based beliefs, and what they have been told and what they have been taught throughout their life about the word of God and what is acceptable and what is pleasing in God's eyes. And it shouldn't be, well, they're wrong and you're right type of debate

We have too many statistics that show that people who are disenfranchised and isolated and lonely, they do not become good as citizens because they don't have the mental health to occupy that high space. They stay low, they stay upset, they stay gripped by their own private h*** because they're not feeling connected to the world. So we're talking about an institution of learning, making sure that their members are safe and connected and feel okay about who they are

I mean, they could not tell you who was the leader of the country. They couldn't tell you what the most popular show on TV was or who the Jonas Brothers were. Right. That's how insulated that community was. And unfortunately, what I saw was just a serious lack of knowledge about other people in the world. What they did know very well was each other and, of course, the Torah. Believe it or not, I almost went to Yeshiva University on a full ride scholarship

But this is a really bad debate because the thing is, the Jewish community, the Jewish religion has a way of living a life and it should not, not be up for debate. If they have a certain way where they want to run an institution, let it be. Because I'm pretty sure if the LGBTQ had a university and they wanted a certain type of way, everybody would have to respect that regardless of what they views on that

@DBPardes: Nothing changes,…unless dollars do.

But they started to self determine which I find that a very convenient term and it's really legalistic term but to sort of take their stance and their posture against this particular type of act. The paradoxy of it all is that if there were a protest and by that I mean a withdrawal of the students to enroll in another school a withdrawal of endowment from those who are funding this university as a private organization, of course, and I'm a product of a private university they rely heavily upon endowments

And it was a scene, excuse me, in that movie where the Holy Spirit was talking to a man. And it was basically all these images going through all these images were going through the mind. And he said, Pick one child. Pick one. Pick one of your children that was left, and you decide who should live and who should die. Pick one. And he couldn't do it. He could not do it. It caused him so much anguish, so much pain

Some people feel, no, that's what God is supposed to do. There are some hardcore religious folks out there that don't feel meditation is anywhere needed in the word of the Gospel. It is not mentioned at all there, but some people can interpret it. To me. No, it actually is. Look at this and this. So it's a very touchy matter

I think that is an inadequate argument about this. This is simply the university saying, you don't want to play by my rules? Well, I'm just going to take my ball and go away. I think it's awful that they've taken away the clubs for everyone. And it makes me wonder, does that include, like, intramural sports athletics that are club based? I remember at my school, we weren't in any rugby leagues that was considered a club

So it was purely men, and all sorts of pressures were brought to bear. They've now changed their policy, but they had votes in favor of excluding women from becoming full members. A private club receiving no public funding of any sort, and those kind of things exist in golf. Moment have been excluded. In fact, organization I'm a member of, I'm very fond of wouldn't let women be members until 1973

But again, it's not easy for me to interpret descriptions where they're written, how full the description of what the university said is in that article. So I will hold back from saying anymore. But the idea that all the students are being deprived of their class clubs, they're all clubs are all being closed down, that doesn't look to me like that's what's going on?

So God destroyed the city. So this goes way back. They've been practicing this belief for thousands of years. So in a way, it was kind of make them hypocrite for allowing the club to continue dealing with homosexuality. I get it. Because it's very traditional. Like fire Oil said, religion is very conservative. Yeah, this is a tough one. To be honest with you. I'm just going to be honest with you. I'm not religious at all

You get to the root and you try to save the tooth if you can, or take that one tooth out, you know, but hiding behind or justifying your actions and your insecurities and your ignorance behind religion, that's unfair. That's unfair. And we are not to judge. We are not to judge. You know, you love the person, not the sin, right? But what they're doing is just who am I to say it's wrong?

This has been such an expanding, ever expanding conversation with so many nuanced differentiators between our voices. We're not all saying the same thing, but what I'm really hearing is that everyone is weighing so much, so many of the variables here so beautifully
