Adult Literacy

article image placeholderUploaded by @Luchianna
So one would have to say that there's definitely a literacy problem going on in America. I say that because someone at work was reading something, and I swear they sound sounded like they were in kindergarten, and it was like, Why are you reading like, that? Very choppy. And it just didn't flow. And I'm not talking about people could not sound out words or pronounce. There's words I can't pronounce either, so let me just put that out there

It's all about the standard test because of that reading grade levels, as you have described. I remember in the 8th grade in Minnesota, anyway, I think this was nationwide, but they had what was called the 8th grade Basic standards Test

Other things are, but not education. You could turn to other countries to see where education is prioritized, but in this country, it's something it's in the middle, somewhere between other things. I'm not going to go into that. But, yeah, it's sad. I'm very aware of how emotional it is for people to be, so I'm always careful to understand how to posit the idea that somebody could go get better reading because I don't want to out them myself

It's more difficult to teach them to read by teaching them phonetically the sounds of the English language. It takes longer, too. It's faster, quick and dirty to teach them sight, to teach them to read by sight, remembering sight words, the whole language away. And in education, that is the dirty little secret, the big fight over the best way to teach children to read

Well, education has Trump beat. They've been doing that. And that's why our education system has gone down the drain, gone down the tube. And as far as Deborah mentioned something about Vietnam veterans coming back, and they were handed a high school diploma. Yeah, high school diploma. And then, of course, about kiddos that have to leave school

Yeah, that happens too. That's what we go and we look that word up in the dictionary, and now they have the what is it? That word can be pronounced to you, and you can hear that word. But I still say the method of teaching children to understand the road map, to read that road map, to read that map of the English alphabetic system is the best way to teach reading. And of course, once they start reading, they're going to read everything

And eventually that will build up an ability for them to do read the book or read the selection by themselves. Another thing, older children, teenagers and adults, you wouldn't want to embarrass them by flashing some kind of ABCs in front of them. But what you do is you have them construct and of course you model this, it can be modeled the teacher a speller's notebook and you have them write, for instance, a letter A
