Placing the responsibility/blame on the individual: gun violence and climate change

article image placeholderUploaded by @kenzie
And I'm seeing a big trend in the fact that there's politicians and these big companies that make a lot of money off of people trying to say, well, it's not our fault and it's not the politician's fault. Let's start blaming the individual. And I think that with climate change especially, it's very obvious that people have been told, like, oh, well, you are the consumer. You are responsible for what you consume

Is the consumer at fault for climate change? Are parents of shooters to blame for not noticing their children’s mental health?

And these ideas, they've been pushed so aggressively by companies like PepsiCo and Coca Cola and Nestle. Right. Why? Because they want their consumers to feel like they're doing something for the world when they're consuming their products and also really deferring the blame. We as consumers. Sure, consuming a lot of plastics is not great for the environment, but parts per million here in comparison to what those companies are doing to the climate and the environment. It's peanuts

@Taylor Pepsi changing from plastic to aluminum is a "save the environment" scam

And therefore, it's interesting because they want you to believe that, oh, this is like a great shift that our company is making and we're doing it because we care about the environment, but it's not actually what they're doing. It's just a different way of disguising the fact that they are polluting the planet

And what I noticed too, is what happens with what you're talking about with this, like, putting the responsibility on the individual when I think you're absolutely right. Like these companies and politicians who they actually have, if they make systemic change, like the people who we voted for, we've given them the responsibility to make this systemic change
