Therapeutic Benefits of Ambient Music

article image placeholderThe Therapeutic Benefits of Ambient Music: Science Shows How It Eases Chronic Anxiety, Physical Pain, and ICU-Related Trauma | Open Culture
It certainly takes us on a journey. It gives us an anchor point. So whereas chill out and jazz and other genres, especially drumming, the Open Culture article focuses on drumming a little bit. It creates the syncopation that we can follow along to. I believe that ambient music has a looser structure but is equally not maybe more grounding. So definitely check out this wonderful short film. Check out Brian Eno's Music for Airports if you haven't listened to it

And I think that leads me to the last thing I want to say. I think it's really as a musician the bar is pretty low. You can kind of noodle around for five minutes and say that you're writing ambient music, and it's very hard to call you out on that. But I think that you actually have to really sweat over it as a composer or an arranger and get past noodling and really do try to create a structure. It can be a very elusive structure

It was really good, but I like the idea still of having some intention behind it, just like minimalist painting, and it does take a process. I wholeheartedly agree. And I think about Basinski again because I had forgotten about him for so long, and I was reintroduced to his disintegration loops, and I wrote a poem in response to it because I was so overwhelmed with sadness and beauty. It was very profound. And I really agree that lyrics, it's not everything

Yeah, I definitely agree with you when you said that music is healing and can be therapeutic, and I think that definitely is the case. I think sometimes it's just finding the right piece of music, but everyone's got a piece of music, either a genre or a song or an album that just makes them stop and relax or brings them back into the room or helps them to just lose themselves for a bit. Music is very powerful

Hey, Tasha, I really appreciate you explaining how you're sort of wired to feel more grounded listening to rock and Disney. There are definitely times where I think especially rock is called for in my life. Disney. I'm still trying to find a way to appreciate more because I do have a six year old. I believe you have a child too, so they must just love you
