tv shows normalizing inappropriate relationships

article image placeholderUploaded by @isabellacroston
Hey, swell. One thing I just wanted to get on here and talk about really quick was the normalization and glamorisation of inappropriate relationships in TV shows. So, so growing up, my favorite TVshow to watch was Pretty Little Liars. And in that TV show, one of the main characters has a relationship with her teacher. And that's not even the craziest thing that's happening in the show. They're all getting stalked by someone who knows all of their secrets and things get really crazy and stuff

And I think a lot of times we forget about that just because all of these teenagers are being played by adults. But really they're portraying people who are literally kids. And if it was being played by somebody who was that like the actual age of the character, then people would be very concerned. I was just thinking about euphoria, for instance, because that's like the hype right now. There are just so many sexually explicit scenes of teenagers

And I guess I watched this in middle school, so I didn't really know the severity of dating like a teacher when you're in high school. And I feel like it was really brushed over. And the only people who saw it as serious were her parents. And even they got over it pretty quickly for the fact that she was about 16 and they ended up watching them get married. And I do think that TV shows do normalize that and especially this one

And it's supposed to be weird on the show, but there's definitely an attempt to make the this seems sweet at times when in reality it's like definitely not sweet. And I've seen variations of that happen in a lot of different shows

And then them getting married at the end of the show was just really, really strange and something that I can't believe when I was younger, I thought was, like, cute to watch and stuff

Fitz are still together and married, and I'm like, what? I think that's so weird. So I think it's really cool how you decided to touch on this because Pretty Liars is such a cool and complex show that I think more people should watch and need to talk about

Hi, Isabella. So I listened to your swell, and I literally could not agree more. I just recently hopped on the Pretty Little Liars train, maybe about, like, a year or so ago. So when I watched it through, I had the exact same kind of, like, mindset that you did. I actually loved Arya and Ezra together. I thought that they were so freaking cute. And, yeah, when her parents didn't support their relationship, I was really mad
