Feeling the discomfort in our arts practice

article image placeholderUploaded by @gretalaundyart
And I think that's exciting as an artist, I want to constantly push myself. I want to see what I can achieve. And I don't want to get stuck in the same old patterns of painting or the same old patterns of behavior or the way I approach something on the canvas. I want to constantly change it and see where it takes me. And that's really exciting. I wonder how else people go about switching it up. And yes, feel free to share if you want to

And I'm only just now kind of thinking of my writing in that in those terms, okay. If I sit with my writing and sit through the discomfort of it not being what I want it to be, not knowing how to say what I want to say, I will

But yeah, like what you're saying, you know, that there's an idea of something that you want to articulate, but you can't find the right words for. And there's definitely that kind of corresponding experience in painting where I know there's something I want to do and I can't quite find how to do it. But the fact is that even the headspace of thinking that means that you are getting closer, that kind of helps. It is hard to do with it

Just another thought Zara to what you're saying. What you're saying is different to having inspiration. What you're saying is having is being on the practice of an idea year. And I think the only answer to that is work and work and letting go and then work. I think about what Chuck Flow said, and he said he doesn't wait for inspiration to strike, which I know is different to what we're talking about. But he just works

Reframing discomfort

Like the artist Kyman Nicholas said, the sooner you make your 1st 5000 mistakes, the sooner you can get past them. It wasn't just that, it was just like. It was the idea that creativity is an endless font. So if one idea doesn't work out, so what? There's another one coming down the line soon. And failure, even on stage, even when 100 people are watching you. So what? Enjoy it. Don't be miserable

They won't continue because you got to have a thick skin and just keep going and have the right self talk, the right mindset. So interesting. Thanks for sharing your email, your thoughts. That was great, actually. Hopefully Zara can hear it too. And she helps her

I think discomfort is sometimes always good and not to be like comfort is the right word maybe, but satisfaction and not maybe being satisfied with where you're at and always reaching for something else. And I think that that's sometimes good and sometimes bad. And I think there's just different points in our lives where we feel that we can be satisfied and we can hit our goals and not need to stress or push ourselves anymore

Yeah, I mean, discomfort is interesting. Like, I revel in creating discipline and doing things from the place, doing things spontaneously within and around discipline, but certainly discover comfort is interesting. I find that happens when I experiment with living in a different place that I'm not comfortable with, like, actually spending a few weeks or a month somewhere totally foreign and being uncomfortable with that foreign place into the point where that foreign place becomes no longer uncomfortable
