An Examination Of Modern Imagination

article image placeholderUploaded by @FryedOreo
When I hear people talk often about a scene from some movie or this reminds them of that, or this reminds them of that movie or that, this or that cartoon or that, I often wonder is this the trappings of modern day imagination? Will we always be constricted to only what the black screen tells us to imagine? With its great feats and innovation of CGI? Have we perhaps conquered imagination as we know it? To where now we only can reference the black screen in terms of how we imagine?

So I think there's something to what you're saying, but I also think there's more to it. I mean, to make this a little even more messier, speaking of modern imagination, we've got AI now creating art. It's pulling from databases full of human created art, and it's blending them together and coming up with something new. Would we say that that's imagination?

And all of our greatest stories tend to point to that is that this monster we see as this other world thing actually rests with inside of us. And it can be great launching pads of ideas to explore. So could it be that with our innovative technology we have stronger, extremely strong reference points of ideas and imagination to which we possibly can be achieving the pinnacle peak of what we are able to imagine?

And the second point that I wanted to make is that I don't believe that even those of us that are extremely practiced when it comes to imagination and using that imaginative muscle, I don't believe that we're not coming up with new ideas on a regular basis. What I believe is that we can't express those new ideas in a new way because of the limitations presented by the languages that we speak and just the general collective existences that we lead

But I do see where you are coming from in the instance that you can come up with an idea that no one has thought about yet. But it's just a matter perhaps of champion that idea, marketing that idea and making sense of that idea to relate to others. And that's where language comes in. And maybe to some degree language dilutes the purity of that idea in favor of relating and communicating in cohesion with one another and language itself

You mentioned thinking about ancient sapiens and imagining the scope of their imaginations and how they were, I guess for lack of a better way of expressing this idea, tasked with expressing those things so that later generations of sapiens could build on those as opposed to experiencing the same exact thing over and over again. I love that idea

And here I had thought maybe my cybernetic zombies were a little more quote unquote livelier than the Borg, but still the same. Anyway, I'm enjoying this conversation. Thank you very much, guys

@SeekingPlumb and @wldthng 🙌 ⚡️ 🧠

And you came to this conclusion almost in a way divorced, of the Borg and Star Trek The Next Generation. I believe that's where that took place on you weren't quite thinking about that, but then someone relayed to you, oh yeah, that. And you're like, oh yeah, that. And it can be a crushing blow, right, when you feel like you're on to something that has never been thought about before
@SeekingPlumb

@FryedOreo @wldthng

And so I'm just saying, yes, I agree with you that long ramble and yes, our zombies, cybernetic zombies, definitely did not were not even reminiscent of the Borg. I mean, they were having dance classes and they had brain kitchens to come up with different recipes, and it was fascinating. But I thank you both very much for this conversation

Okay. I couldn't help it. I ran across this today. Maybe Instagram was listening, but anyway, this kid has sort of summed up much of our conversation. Not entirely, but anyway, I thought I'd share

And it definitely excites me to know that imagination out there is still beloved and cherished and it's not something to be thrown away and discarded because responsibilities and stuff. But imagination is just so powerful of an idea but a way of life for human beings. And I argue it's why we are still here and why I am able to talk with you. Thanks for the share

@FryedOreo

Well said. What also makes this interesting is that I have the camera and the mic turned off for Instagram because I don't want them listening in, because they do tend to do that. It's shaped differently, my ads. So this really popping up the way it did is really pretty amazing. Also, I have to say that I love the idea of robotic trees or tree robots

If you're a great storyteller, like if you can go back 1000 over Men since the beginning of time when we were telling stories, a lot of stories were based on reality or trying to understand how life was created. So you'll come up with these crazy stories about nature and out of space. And I think religion, religion was born. It was created out of our imagination to explain why everything exists, why we exist. And so we tell these folklores. Yeah, folklore

Imagination is something we take for granted. Imagination is what stops us at times from doing more with our life. Imagination is really a neutral thing, but we have the power to make it great or for the power to keep us from being great based upon imagination. So what I loved about this conversation is that it put us in a position to where we had to imagine and be creative within the way we think

While imagination can't exactly be gauged but if I had to compare I guess I'd go with the extremes

Well, if we think about measuring imagination and how rich it is, technically, I think we the ones we can consider pure authentic imagination would be in a time when art did not exist, when people didn't have inspiration from anything besides the natural phenomenon and life itself, not from other art. There's this book called Stealing Like an Artist which says that that most of the art we create is taking inspiration from other art

When we look at hand paintings that predate most of what we know of art to be in existence, it's very amazing to think what they must have thought doing that. No monetary gain, no social media platform. They're plugging. It's almost like, we are here, we survived, and we are art. As I strive to bring art and everything that I do, including Swell, I consider myself an audio artist, by the way. I feel what I do out here is art

You think it's your idea. So technically it's an original thought. But in our world, it's not original because it already exists. So now it comes into what lens you view it through. If you view it in the lens of pieces of art, it's definitely, I guess, not original. But like, if you think of it from the perspective of the artist, it was an original thought to them

But I think one who seeks to be original completely can, I don't know, kind of miss the point of it all. I think when you lose that sort of instinct and you're just going with something that feels right to you, regardless if it's original or not, that's when you make a breakthrough. I think that's the problem with Hollywood now. We're so fixated on what can be successful, what will the test audience score high on and what the formulaic algorithm will please
