Interview with Riya Massey - HBCU LIFE

article image placeholderUploaded by @Dee94
Just kind of being surrounded by women who are all black and all kind of being driven in similar ways, it seems so expiring. So on that note, let me introduce a woman I highly respect and look up to, my cousin, RIA Massey. She is currently attending Howard University in Washington, DC. She's originally from Oakland, California, and chose to go to Howard University and study criminology and theater arts. So we will start by talking about her choice to go to Howard

But knowing that I could go to an HBCU, honestly, California. I love California. I'm from California, but I really just wanted to change the scenery and so what better way to do that than to move across the country on the opposite side of the country? So I ended up choosing Howard. There's a lot of notable alumni and I just felt that Howard would be the best place for me to grow as an adult and to further my education

Okay. Yeah, Aria. Alright. I respect that turning down Spellman because of those choices. Respectable. I definitely think that it's a really cool example to have. And Camilla because she definitely set the tone for the HBCU life and I hope that my kids can kind of following that footstep as well. Yeah. So on that note of just kind of like living on the campus and experiencing the dorm life, how has that been for you?

So living on campus and in the dorm has actually been an experience that I didn't actually see coming. So specifically for me, I know that this is it isn't the experience for everyone, but my floor is just lit, at least for my hallway. I know. Maybe not names, but a good 80% of everybody's name, but I know all the faces in my hallway life

But yeah, that's really cool to know that the dorms have been a super positive experience for you because you're right. Not everybody does have that experience. Yeah. So just to touch on how going into a black University has changed your opportunities or has opened up different opportunities for you, I'm how do you believe that it has impacted you in a way that a public University would not have

There are plenty of seminars I've attended to, a couple just discussing career opportunities. And I really appreciate that about the school, because going into College, a lot of people don't know what they want to do or how they want to further their career or their education. And so seminars and events and internships, things like that, they honestly allow you to narrow it down or just to even explore something new

I totally believe in that. And, yeah, just thank you for sharing everything that you did with us today. I appreciate it. I really appreciate you being on this chat with me. And feel free to spread the word about swell, maybe invite some of your dormitories to kind of talk about their life on here, too, and just kind of see what sort of topics you can engage with throughout the app. It's really cool
