Who is at Fault?

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
Okay, quick question. Look at this headline. You can click into the article that I posted in the description. What are your thoughts? Are the makers of Fortnite responsible? Is this a slippery slope? They're comparing them to the tobacco industry. It's all fodder for good conversation. I would love to hear your ideas about this. Yes

Hey, Deb, thanks for inviting me to the conversation. I'm a huge gamer, always have been, really. And you know, I used to be a teacher, so I might have a unique perspective on this kind of fitting into both the world of gamers and those that are concerned about the impact that gaming may have on younger audiences. The article mentions that there are about 80 million players monthly on Fortnite

I ran out of time there, Deb, and I'm so sorry for rambling and taking up, like, several minutes of your swell here, but I do think that this is very much so a case of it's both of their faults. It's the parents. It's the game companies. Parents need to be more responsible for their children and for what their children do. And like I said, if you think it's harming their health, you have to step in and take action

And so and I actually want to say he didn't specifically say, but from the way how he described the games, say I picked up somebody pretty high up in the company the other day as my Uber ride. Now, I will say this as a parent, and I do believe in giving my son choices and helping him navigate the pros and cons of those choices and understanding that he's completely responsible for whatever the consequence, positive or negative is, however

I hope that you respond or dislike all that. But whoever listening to this is all about how you grew up and all about how you can control things because you got control. This is remember that you are still getting the parent, you still get control and yet you got to remember that you are making these children, these youth and the chipmunks to the new people that's going to be taking over soon. So just remember that you got control and thank you for listening

And the reason why I think the parents are responsible for this also is because the owners of financial responsibility I know that's a conversation you should not be having with a child in an ideal world, but we are not in an ideal world. Targeted advertising has become a big problem even for adults. Definitely for kids because again, kids don't know better. They just want something

In the utopian world, that always is the truth, that you're not bearing the burden of parenting one child, that you have people to help you to navigate this. But yes, the gaming world, like the tobacco world, is all about the bottom line and how to create addiction and loyalty and obsession. And it's complicated, but I think these really invigorated conversations give us a peek into everyone else's private lives and how they're coping with it

I don't know how old these kids are to sort of take a hands off approach and say that, well, they're not eating and they're not showering, and so it's somebody else's fault. But the brain of children, they're constantly developing

It was because on the 26th, they all took the boxes, and they always used to play with the boxes in the Bronx. And that was what they did with the gifts, as they did in England. They'd make gifts out of boxes and toys out of boxes. It was the imagination. It was what they had to play with. And I'm not being a luddite here

Am I going to amen to all of this? I did think about that too. Right? If they're jarred out of it in the middle of whatever happens to be going on in the game but I wondered maybe if they got like a warning or even two warnings. A ten minute one a five minute one, or a five minute and three minute or something. Anyway, logistics, I guess, don't really matter, but I listened to a two minute clip of a psychiatrist science migilcresist

My kids never played a game during the week because he used to focus on his studies. So my youngest, he plays the game on the weekend. You have to set the parameters and the boundaries. Now, if you have a child that's addicted to Fortnite or any other game that has any type of violence or whatever, and they go out and hurt somebody, and this family wants to sue because their child was hurt and his child says, hey, the game influenced me. Okay?

That is insane to me that a game can be responsible for a child's hygiene, but it seems like such an American thing. Maybe this didn't take place in America, but it feels so American. But yes, my kids shower and brush their teeth just as much as they play the game. And this, to me, feeds into those stereotypes of gamers. It reinforces people's worldview of negative views on gaming. It just, to me, reeks of anti gaming propaganda
