IS THERE A CRISIS IN THE NURSING INDUSTRY? How can we help the nurses who help us?

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
So nurses take care of us. And sometimes we look up from the bed and we wonder how are they doing? And do we ever really feel up to asking because we're probably seeing them at a time when we're needing help and we don't have the capacity to show our compassion or our curiosity. So I thought this would be a great forum to ask nurses how are they doing? We've heard the statistics

Please join in this critical conversation about caring about the people who care about us @annepera

So I started in nursing because I really needed to get a job and finish University in four years, which I did and came came out to San Francisco and started working as an oncology nurse at the age of 20. And so that bedside nursing thing lasted a few years for me. And then I realized that there was so much more that nurses were not able to do for human beings who were suffering in the hospital setting. So I started studying the healing arts at that time

Integration

I think we're all curious about multiple modalities of healing. And when are people in your position allowed to cross those lines and help based on your vast knowledge

But I really continue to believe and I know that there are places in the country where nurses are happier in their jobs, where they are learning the healing arts to take care of themselves first and then bring this healing to their patients. And this is really where my focus is. In the midst of an absolutely devastating crisis in morale, in staffing, in institutions ability to regain the trust that has been eroded through the pandemic, we need to come together as nurses

Emotional landscape

So thank you so much for anything you could do to bring us there so that we can really have that visceral understanding of what it feels like to be that nurse that is having a crisis inside the industries, crisis

For example, we're dealing with getting stroke patients moved from emergency departments into a NeuroInterventional lab. These are things that have to be done immediately. And yet you've got 20 other cases you're working on, and everything is emergent. Every patient needs a higher level of care. That's just my life in a controlled environment, working remotely and still becomes unmanageable. And eventually you do need to step away. And I think that's one of the options that nurses need to look at right now

A break in the clouds

But there's something very inhumane and unrealistic about that because I think we have to start looking at the parts of our society that are truly broken and need to be fixed, because one day we're going to regret it if we don't do it now. So those of us who have the luxury of not being in the health system right now, but we have the capacity to vote. We have the capacity to bring in new legislators that make a difference

And so I would like to see us pass Medicare for all type plan. We already have national medical plans that are working well, better than some private insurance plans. And so we just need to do things like the VA, okay? And then you've got in California Medical and Calcare and Cal kids. All these are national and statewide programs that are being delivered very efficiently. So we're not asking for the moon here. We're asking for coverage for every human being in our community

We don't want to bring anything of our issues into that patient atmosphere because it should be about that patient getting better and patient seeking healing in a physical, holistic manner when they're underneath our care. But to put it bluntly, we are not in the best state right now. There are a lot of things outside of our control that are affecting our health care system and how nurse deliver health care
