WHAT DO WE TELL THE KIDS? Finding the words to help kids through traumatic times

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
There should be some basic language that people can adopt and I guess customize per event, but is that something you're looking at as a way to it sounds so crazy, but to codify and formalize this language so that trauma language can be put into every SEL playbook, every social emotional learning playbook. Thanks for answering this first question and so happy you're here. Welcome to swell

You. Thank you so much for inviting me to this conversation. I feel honored to contribute to what I feel is such an important topic. Your question around is there some basic language that we can codify into the sort of playbook for dealing with traumatic or disruptive events that happen in society is really kind of what was the impetus for my in research?

So in other words, you have the language developed, you have people coming in, you have ongoing check ins, I'm assuming. But how do you work with parents to make sure that they have the language to check in with their kids? And is there a partnership there that you're happy with, or could it be better? Because I know when kids come home, that's the front line there. The parents are seeing what's going on

And I think that involves asking some essential questions for schools like how are we inviting families to be partners? How are we making it accessible for everyone, welcoming for everyone? And then in that partnership, how are we leveraging the cultural wealth and wisdom of our communities, of our families in partnership with them? So not just informing them or educating them, but how are we bringing to them that's able to have these conversations together?

It needs a constant massaging and a constant connection. And I'm so happy. People like you are emerging as voices of not only leadership, but of rolling up your sleeves and coming out with the right curriculum, the right protocols. One of my final questions to you it's a two parter. One is where do you see this issue going that you're so embedded in? Where do you see some next milestones for yourself?

There are many people leading healing work in various ways, obviously already. But this conversation in particular, I hope continues without me because I think that's essential. As far as my personal next milestones, now that I am adapting this new role as a mom, I have this perspective of what resources, what tools can we create or find for young people growing up in the world?

What a beautiful new beginning and only shining huge amounts of light onto this and anything that feels dark and heavy in society, let's keep it out the door for now and let's just let you be in the beautiful space you're in as a new mom. It's just so exciting and I'm so thrilled for you. Thank you again
