Why is Disney slyly "cancelling" The Owl House?

Hello. Also, I want to talk about Owl House, which is a lovely, lovely show on Disney. Plus, it's about a girl who's in, like normal world, like our world, who finds herself thrown into a fantasy world. And she loves fantasy. Like cutesy, lovely, pure witch fantasy. She's obsessed with a certain book series, but this world is not the fantasy world she expected. It is not cute and fluffy

So one where everything sort of comes back to normal at the end and you can watch them in any order with something that is just openly queer and like that, would that be able to exist? Would it be able to exist without slowly unveiling the characters queerness as you go, as you already attached to them? Because I'm not sure if it would be able to exist right now, especially not on a platform like Disney
Hello. Hey, Charlie. I admittedly don't know a lot about the Owl House, and I think that is in large part due to the level of marketing done for the show, which was very, very little in my experience. One thing I do know about it is is that one of the leading stars is Alex Hirsch, who you might be familiar with because of his work on Gravity Falls

Hi, Taylor, thanks for your response. Your response actually made me think of the term queerbaiting, which is a thing that is very prominent right now and has been for a while where they will show, you know, two characters that might might possibly be interested or have some kind of chemistry but never actually put them together, never have them kiss, never have anything like that

I mean, luckily, they didn't pair her off, but I know that there's been a lot of fans waiting to see this happen, and it'd be great if they do. And if they do, it might be out of coercion, but it has to be louder than the conservative of America that they're pandering to. But thanks for raising this

Hey, this is a great conversation. I'm agreeing wholeheartedly that there's levels to which we have to dig to understand the true motivation behind things that are canceled, especially when they're dealing with content that pushes people, people's understanding of what they can handle as viewers. So, in other words, what responses did they get back? What polls did they use to take the temperature reading, what were those voices like and who was saying they were comfortable and who wasn't?

Even the idea that it skewed older, I would assume that they did testing of the show to see who the audience might be and how to market it. So this just doesn't make sense in terms of the argument that it just didn't fit the brand. And even I guess unless they snuck in the Square News part. And I don't understand why they would have not known like someone was not paying attention or doing their job if it just snuck through like that. So I don't know

So when I saw your post, my first instinct is to be honest, it has been partly the reason, if not the full reason why they've canceled the show. I think there is stuff that wasn't a news a few months ago around the fact that a staff member at Disney had made a formal complaint and was trying to take to a tribunal for discrimination. I think it was transphobic behavior, but I can't quite remember

Hi, Melissa. Yeah. This was kind of my initial thought, like, who missed this? Did they just realize the show was queer at the end and then went, oh, we need to get rid of this as soon as possible, people without causing a riot, but just wanted to add as well that the show definitely didn't flop. The show has had a good reception and has made, like, an okay amount of money for its first run with not much marketing, really

But they're not breaking any ground. They're not doing things that other people haven't done before, which is saddening, really, just for the state of art in general, and how creators like Donna Terrace are restricted by companies like this trying to play it safe
