Meet Sex Education's First Non-Binary Character

article image placeholderSex Education’s Dua Saleh on How Cal Isn’t a Nonbinary Caricature
And the head mistress makes the argument of you have female anatomy, so you know where to go, essentially. And it's so interesting. And I think it's such a powerful moment, pointing to how dehumanizing it can be living in a world that conflates gender with anatomy and the ways in which we are subject to being put in boxes and in spaces that feel unsafe or where we're not recognized or seen

Spoiler alert! Don't listen to this is you haven't watched to the end of Se

But for those who are happy with the Spoilers, really happy that Cal put their sense of worth first and really laid their cards on the table and how important they think that the queerness of their relationship would be. And obviously that throws Jackson into a bit of inner turmoil. But I think that's really interesting to watch and see. And it's so beautiful that Jackson takes it very seriously

@bowie eek! I've been desperate to talk about this!

So I really felt that scene on a personal level, and I thought that they dealt with some of the things, even including their uniform. And at one point they get thrown a skirt. And the amount of school uniforms in this country where females in the summer wear skirts, you're not allowed to wear shorts. I wasn't allowed to wear shorts. It was skirts. If you want to cool down or you wear trousers, which is interesting

@Charlieri sorry for the passionate rant

I can't remember their name but reaches out and asks for help. And we have that moment with the Binder, which also I have never really seen that done well on TV and highlighting the importance of getting binders, right? Yeah. I just thought, you know what I don't think, apart from likely mist when there's a bit in one of the songs where they're wrapping a bandage around themselves because they're going to go and join the barricades

@NLOFrank To follow on from your passionate rant!

But that's what makes it so useful is that it will be so widespread and in the mainstream that people will understand that there are safety concerns when it comes to binding properly. And I think that kind of like safety information is what sex education as a show is all about

@Charlieri okay I need to calm now. Too excited lol

But I have been to places that basically the school and the sex education or lack of sex education throughout the three seasons in sex Education, the series are not far off portraying a lot of what I've seen in schools in the UK here. And so to see them talk very naturally about all sorts of things

Now & Then

And it made me think about the movie now and then, which came out in the 90s and was a movie that I absolutely loved growing up, and it's been an important source of self understanding for me, actually, because the character that I related to the most was Roberta, who was played by Christina Ricci when young and then was portrayed by Bowie O'Donnell as an adult

Les Miserables - Eponine

I've not seen now and then, but I know the exact kind of character you're talking about this, like archetype of this, like tomboy that's trying to, like, crush down their femininity because they're surrounded by men that's usually, like the amount of explanation for it. But obviously these can be potentially more nuanced. But we try and find this representation wherever we can
