Are you a fan of Hysterical Realism?
According to Wikipedia, Wood uses the term pejoratively to talk about this contemporary conception of, quote, the big, ambitious novel that pursues, quote vitality at all costs and Consequently knows a thousand things but does not know a single human being. Now I get where Wood is coming from here because something that I found challenging about White Teeth is that there is an absurdity to the pros and the ways in which the characters are described and how they interact with one another

Wow. I never heard of this before. My first gut is Yuck. That it's called that. I think great writers are creating characters to take us into places where we can't go in our own limited selves. I have read Middle Sex. I've read Dave Edgar's. I have not read Zatie. She's on my list, but I have to say, What's the problem with that? And isn't it wonderful?
