#AuthorInterview | Let's talk queer rom-coms with Sizzle Reel author Carlyn Greenwald

article image placeholderUploaded by @bowie
Her Ya debut, Time Out, was co written with actor and producer Sean Hayes and producer Todd Milliner, and it'll be published by Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers in May. So you also have that to look forward to. And Carlin, I would love if you came back and we can talk about it shortly before its release as well. When Carlin's not writing, she's scouring theme park, YouTube, playing video games and hanging with her dogs

#newbooks

Part of why I am so excited for this book to be out in the world is that it is described as a queer rom.com, and I'm curious if there's maybe even a sentence or two or a paragraph that you would love to share with us to give us a sense of the book

And do you have any writing advice for those out there who maybe are wanting to transition either from Ya to adult or a different genre or co writing to writing solo? Any lessons learned or insights you've had from the process I think would be really lovely for our writing and reading community to hear on swell

#askafailure

One of my many obsessions is talking with other writers and creatives about failure and how it has been part of their journey or process. I'm curious if failure has all factored into your story so far as someone who is such a multifaceted writer and creator and how maybe it led to or was at all a part of the journey of writing and getting Sizzle reel out into the world

And I would love to know if there are any queer romcoms stories, whether they be books, movies, video games, anything that is just very queer that either influenced your work on Sizzle Wheel or is just something you are completely obsessed with and would recommend to anyone out there seeking more queer content. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us. Really looking forward to this conversation

@bowie

Yeah, for sure. So Sizzle Reel is again an adult queer rom.com that is about a 24 year old talent manager's assistant in Hollywood who, upon realizing she is bi, decides to, quote unquote, make up for lost time by trying to get with this ambiguously gay actress client. And shenanigans kind of happen after that

I think it's most valuable to read books that are published within the last, like, two years, but I think it's also useful to go back and read five years and, like, ten years if you want to just get a history, a sense of what age category you're going into to and sort of the general conventions and sort of the limitations and breadth and just everything that goes into what makes the story different and I think especially transitioning from ya to adult

@bowie

I think that it's just one of those things where publishing and creative jobs are so unpredictable and you kind of just have to you eventually do. Hopefully you grow thick skin or you sink. And I think that part of the process that I did to growing that thick skin was no project to me is like my number one end all project. I tried to find something to absolutely love in every single project

And then otherwise, I think I was also influenced by some straight books. So, like, The X Talk by Rachel and Solomon was one that really showed me how to do adult romance that I really appreciate. And then as for books now, I mean, there are so many good ones. In the Event of Love by Courtney Kay is one of my absolute favorites. Love and other disasters by Anita Kelly is absolutely wonderful. Kisser Once for Me by Alison Cochrane

Carlin, thank you so much for celebrating Sizzle real with us. I am so stoked that this book is out in the world and that I keep seeing more about it in all of these different book spaces that I love. And I just had to say I absolutely adored what you had to say about failure and your particular journey
