On Utilitarianism - where good ideas go awry
And it does maybe restore your faith in humanity a little bit that people feel like they can justify fudging results just because more money would go towards charity. But what happens when you amplify this effect? This is where good ideas go awry. This is where utilitarianism becomes an oroboros or a snake that eats its own tail. Because the moment your outcome changes, so will your methodology
So a disclaimer for anyone but Bennett, because I know I can hear in my head your response, but I don't know the ins and outs of the philosophical perspectives, the classical academic sort of perspectives on utilitarianism. So I'm not speaking from that perspective. But I think if we're going to prioritize ability, I think of that as sort of a tool in the toolbox, but to make it a philosophy, a way of being or existing, then it can become problematic very quickly

So philosophy is not about holding on to a version and not letting go. It is about understanding diversion and then thinking over it. And in that not thinking you are better than it thinking any of those things. You don't become an absolutist like, oh, I have learn utilitarianism, so everything I do has to feed into that mold, everything I say has to comply. No, that's not philosophy, that's academic discussions around it

All I do know is if we are looking at the past through those lenses, then we can't help but see those as absolutes interesting. Thank you. I don't know why that suddenly clicked today, but
