Artist of the Week: Peter Uka

article image placeholderTitle: Juxtapoz Magazine - Inner Frame: Peter Uka is Telling Us a History @ Galerie Voss, Dusseldorf
And I don't mean to speak for him, but from my understanding, what he's saying is that he wanted to create art that was truly representative of the people living their lives thriving, being themselves, enjoying life, relaxing instead of adding to the already existing art that often portrays black people as subjugated in some way. I didn't know this when I was first drawn to his art. I just loved the colors and I love how dynamic they are

Thank you for sharing this artist. I love that his paintings and his art kind of cause some normalization create some normalization of of what it's actually like to live in Nigeria, because I think that so often in media, we see different countries in Africa being associated with all of these very desolate desert landscapes with elephants and giraffes. Well, I think that that's true for a part of Africa, Africa is an entire continent with cities and suburbs and all of that stuff

I agree. Izzy, and I'm so glad that a few of you have already started to appreciate learning about Peter Echo because I think his work is absolutely phenomenal. And like Izzy says, I think it's an ideal juxtaposition with the art we usually see in museums and galleries that include black people and black bodies. Because I think Peter is right. Usually you see these people subjugated, so it's necessary for us to have art to have content that normalizes these people's lives
