Artists' Books

article image placeholderGifts from our elders by Kerry McAleer-Keeler
I am taking a PostClassical sociological theory class, and in that class, I think it was yesterday our professor brought up the concept of artists' books, and it was something I've heard of before but never really looked into it all. And then I looked them up, and I was absolutely fascinated by them. So I thought I would come in here and share with you all what an artist book is

What are they? What do you think of them? #arts #books #creativity https://s.swell.life/SSOoiI9lUAPDUs8

It brings together your love for both literature and arts, because that's exactly what I think I find so interesting about this. I think the way in which story is being played with these physical objects all within the same space. It's given me a lot to think about. Like, what would my artist book be for some of the projects I'm working on? How would I represent them with certain physical objects? And I think that could be a really useful exercise, actually

Hey, this is really cool because I didn't know of this subgenre subgenre subgenre because I've always been intrigued with shadow boxes, but they're so different than this particular use case because it's much more full of lyrical narrative where it's like a whole different level of somebody's storytelling. I'm going to link an article about shadow boxes just so we can have the comparison in here. And I just love the picture you posted too. It's really great. I'm so excited

yes! 📚

But the thing was because it was a Museum I can't remember so long ago, but I didn't feel like it was okay to touch them and explore them. I kind of kept my hands off and just looked at them. However, now at the University where I work, the library has a collection of artists' books at the reference desk and you can actually check them out and you are encouraged to check them out

Can we call these 'books'?

As far as I understand it, because I've always thought a book was an object filled with text that you learn from and study from and what they're making isn't exactly that. But that doesn't make it any less important or interesting. It's just a few things to think about, but I'm really happy with how the conversation is going so far, and I really hope more people hop in who are intrigued by this concept
