The Math Culture Wars - why does teaching times tables have to be a political issue?

article image placeholderAmerica’s maths wars
So that part over hundreds of years and different kind of cooling systems kids have been taught has worked out well, and I think it should continue to be part of our education system, kicking it out completely and saying you should focus on just basic concepts and exploring numbers that are disservice in terms of building and mathematical literacy. That said, the ability to kind of really understand the concept is also essential

Thank you for sharing this article. It's very insightful and thanks for your thoughts on this. I think growing up math is one of those things that is international and it doesn't have a language and it's the same in every culture to some extent. So it's been really interesting understanding the importance of mathematics in different cultures and the stress in education in these areas. So I appreciate you bringing this to you today of our group and understanding the importance as well as the focus for many different countries

And I think that's impacting our quality of education greatly because we're dealing with a lot more kids who are not staying focused and not staying attentive in their classes. And teachers are having to do more and more stuff for classroom management than they ever have before because they are trying to control larger groups of kids who are not staying focused and attentive. And then you've got the kind of dumbing down of the classroom to the lowest common denominator so that they're not leaving anyone behind
