How the Coronavirus Is Devastating Israel's Ultra-Orthodox Communities

article image placeholder‘How Many Funerals Will Come Out of This One?’
Hey everyone, this is a really indepth and important look at how the ultraorthodox communities in Jerusalem are being affected by the pandemic. This is not not a world I know a ton about, which is partially why I read it

Thank you for bringing this to light. Bowie I didn't get to read all of the article, but I think I read about half of it and maybe less than half it's kind of long, but I wanted to hop on here and share my thoughts because I'm not entirely surprised that this is happening, and it's not because I have any disdain towards Orthodox Jews. I respect them and I respect their faith and their devotion to Judaism

And it gave me even more to learn about and look into as far as the different sections of Orthodox Judaism so that's the biggest thing took away and hope to hear more perspectives from people who have a chance to look into it

Hey, Bowie, thanks for posting this. And Leora, thank you for contributing. I wanted to add a few things because I have a lot of experience with the ultraorthodox communities actually here in the United States, I spent a little bit more than two, two weeks in a town called New Square in New York. It is the most Orthodox Jewish community in the entire country. It's as Uber religious as Judaism gets

Unorthodox on Netflix & women in the Orthodox community

And I found that really interesting because my experience in learning about the community specifically in New York and Brooklyn, was just how incredibly patriarchal and sexist it is. And that's part of what this series Unorthodox was looking at. And it's based on a true story of this woman's experience in that community. And I think what really stuck out to me about this woman's perspective as part of one of the communities in Jerusalem is she is very promising

@liora 🙏 @Taylor @bowie please run the UN 😁

First of all, a shout out to Leora. I had nothing to add based on your initial response, just a gorgeous flow of ideas and had such pathos and empathy. And I just super appreciated. And Bowie and Taylor also, it's so easy to fall into a lazy mindset when it comes to egregious behavior and not having the capacity or the willingness to really look at it from all sides. And I think this conversation is just a remarkable example of what we're all capable of

And it's one of the things that makes me most uncomfortable about Jewish Orthodoxy, even though I don't want to be made uncomfortable by it, because I feel sort of excluded and unwanted some of the time when I interact with them, especially as a woman. There's a lot of expectations on how you're supposed to act and dress and talk, and in synagogue in particular, there's this wall called the Mahitza that separates men and women
