Get to Know the Artist: Alma Thomas

She began to paint seriously, though, in 1960, when she retired from her 38 year career as an art teacher in public schools, mainly in middle schools. And it was in the years that followed that she would become regarded as a major painter in the Washington Color Field School. So during the 50s, when she was attending school, she had a few people that she studied under Joe Summerford, Robert Gates and Jacob Cayman, which I'm not familiar with

And it's hopeful for me. Not that I'll ever be recognized like her. But when you get a late start and you have had to work all your life basically to just keep house over your head or a roof other your head and having to sort of put your art in the background to finally get to be able to do it full time. It's really a pleasure and a gift
