How being labled as "Gifted" can hamper your life after school

And then moving forward from that, I went on to do an apprenticeship for two years that ended up falling apart towards the end of there as well. And I left the apprenticeship and then code happened and I was in a bit of a kind of weird space in a bit of limbo and doing part time jobs, and then kind of accidentally really alongside the qualifications that I got from the two A levels I got

Since leaving school my life hasn’t gone the way that people thought it would, anyone who has experienced similar, the floor is yours :)

Anyways, she talks about, I guess, self compassion versus self esteem and how there was this whole movement like a decade ago where they were really trying to boost children's self esteem, like telling them how great they are, how amazing they are, just showering them with these with words of encouragement, I guess, or just like saying how amazing they are. But how that also ended up doing harm in the long run

I feel like there's far more to the questions or the things that you're pondering than maybe we realize. My brother was deemed gifted. They didn't test or look at me, and there was, of course, repercussions of how I was constantly compared to him and so on. But from the outside looking in on his experience, we had a very strict upbringing, so he knew what he ought to do and should do and so on. And that led him to each next consecutive step

Without a doubt, everyone comes into this life with their natural talents and gifts, but then there are certain skills or gifts as well that end up being appreciated more or encouraged more and that you get more acknowledgement for. So, yeah, I think taking some time to actually examine, like what are my natural talents and gifts versus what were the skills that I built up because it was being encouraged

And I tattooed my lip because I was like that was the one thing that my spirit wanted to do that I wouldn't do because I needed to do good in my interviews or I needed to be professional or whatever it was. And it was just this radical letting go of, like, holy s***. If I don't need to do all these things and be gifted and be professional and be perfect, wow, I can just be me

And looking back now, there are other subjects that I would have picked, but you kind of only really get your one or two chances to pick and then do it, otherwise you get left behind and suddenly you then don't have the qualifications to follow the pathway that you actually want to do. And then I would find myself in conversations with people like my parents when they ask me what job do you want to do?

You know, I actually thought about you quite a few times after you made that share, and I shared back, and I hadn't heard anything. And I wondered, how's this guy doing? So it's good to hear from you. Good to hear. Hear something clicked or stuck?

But to yourself and to everybody else who replies to the rambling message that I put out, it's massively appreciated and nice to know that there are people that take the time and I consider it and I'm kind enough to reply to the museums that got in my head. But thank you all again and I will post a lot more than I have been
