Earth Day 2022: Chico State Edition

article image placeholderUploaded by @katiecal
Hi, Swell. So Earth Day is coming up on Friday, April 22, and Chico State is having an Earth Day celebration on campus. Swell is going to be there to support the Earth Day organization, to support Chico State and also to kind of talk a little bit about about the app there. I did want to say Chico State takes sustainability and environmentalism very seriously. In 2007, Chico State was a founding signatory of the American College and University President's climate commitment

What is one sustainability tip that you think more people should be aware of?

Hey, Katie, great topic here. Seeing how Earth Day is approaching steadily, I really like the idea of surf clothes always. I think another thing you can do to kind of recycle things is like my grandma has been kind of teaching me this. It's like if you get green onions or like garlic, you can regrow from the scraps. So just like replanting things that you get from the grocery store to kind of reduce that footprint is nice. What else does she teach me to do?

Hey, Katie, we said a lot of great stuff about Chico State, and we do work very hard to be sustainable. And I think we keep up with a great job of doing that. And I think a tip that I would suggest is how much water we're wasting. I feel like it's going back to elementary school when I learned this, you need to turn the faucet off when you're brushing your teeth. And now that's my little tip

Recycling!

Hey Katie, thank you for that awesome tip about Thrifting and how to be more sustainable. I think a great tip is to just learn how to recycle properly. It's really easy if you just have one can to just throw everything all together. Trash and recycling in the mix. And so something we do in our house. I have three roommates and that is also another reason why it can be hard to keep track of like what trash versus recycling is

Hey Katie, I think this is a really good topic, and it's really good to shine light to it, especially with how global warming and climate change has been affecting us in recent years. One of the things that I really enjoy about CHICOSTATE is is all of the tips and tricks on how to be more sustainable and care for the environment

One thing that I'm trying to do is repurpose things. I want to make sure that if something is given to me or if I buy something and there's a way that I can make it last longer and not just Chuck it in the recycling or the garbage, I really want to explore what those options are. One thing that I started doing was making small succulent containers

Hi. There are many ways that we can be sustainable, but I think one of the biggest ones that we can do as a community is to donate unused clothes. And probably just like, turn off light when you're not using them. At least in my household, there's always like five lights on at a time, and I'm just going around the house turning them off because it's so unnecessary. Unless you're in a room, turn off the light

One sustainability tip. People should be more aware of how to like properly dispose of your mask so they don't interact with like local wildlife and stuff when you throw them away

Hi. So I think one tip for great sustainability would be to kind of look out for like the fast fashion brands out there. I know that does take up a lot of energy and a lot of water, too. So Thrifting is a good option to do. And also, I guess like recycling, of course, and knowing how to divide the plastic and the trash have to get those mixed up. But yeah, that would be my tip for sustainability

Hey Katie, a good sustainability tip would be to start your own compost so you can grow your own soil and grow your own garden. So you can have your own fruits and vegetables

I think one thing that people should be more aware of when it comes to sustainability is like, you know, we talk about plastic straws, and so people stop using plastic straws and, like, paper straws when they think they're making a video a difference. But we're still using, like, plastic lids and plastic cups all the time. And I just think more people should just bring a water bottle and not use disposable stuff in general, because cutting out things like straws is like a start

That is a very valid point, Jason. I think when we talk about trying to make changes in our individual lives, we don't necessarily grasp the concept that in order for it to really make an impact, certain political steps need to be made as as well, so that the community is kind of more involved and. Yeah, just kind of creates a greater impact that way or more how do you say more efficient impact, I guess, other than us just changing our individual lifestyles?
