Film Adaptations of Video Games: Yay or Nay?

article image placeholderUploaded by @Taylor
The one that comes to mind would probably be like Detective Pikachu and only because I felt like they were very creative in terms of the story and the world building. The new Sonic movie looks kind of cool, but aside from that, it's pretty slim pickings, if I'm being honest with you. So I wanted to start a discussion about this and talk about how we feel in general. Film, film, film adaptations of video games. Yay here for it

So I think if something for like God of War were to come out, if they stayed true to the storyline and the actor that they chose to be credos was actually had the acting chops to do it, it could be good. There's two other game franchises that are almost cinematic in themselves, and they are The Wolf Among US and The Walking Dead, which were both made by Telltale before they went out and got bought out by another company

It's used to having a multitude of options what the character will do and then when you limit that, it kind of just like lacks the allure of the original video game. So I think unless it's like a strong spot, they usually do come pretty short. I have to watch the Detective Pikachu movie. I've not seen that

Death of original content

I'd be honest with you, when I first saw the trailer for it, I thought this is going to be garbage. And thankfully your nieces and nephew talked me into watching it and I genuinely enjoyed it. I thought it was a really good film and I thought it was a really cute adaptation. Now I said the word cute

I saw Detective Pikachu and I personally didn't like it. I felt like there was a lot of misconceptions about it. Maybe it's just because I'm such a big fan of Pokemon, but I guess it just changed people's perspective though, overall. But when it comes to choosing movies and visiting everyone in general, talking about how Sonic is like going to be like super cool movie, I don't know. I haven't mixed about that though

I wasn't interested in it at all. I watched it and I think I turned it off. The newest one, I just wasn't interested. Sonic. I don't think I watched too much of that. And yeah, I just really haven't been fully invested into that. I think I'm now at the age where it's not surprising anymore to hear that something is being turned into a live action film

I'm 50/50. I wanna see more cause one of them has to hit

I also think something that's interesting to keep in mind for future Studios is that like I had a guest on my podcast that I think had a good point. Video games are more like theater than they are like movies because movies, you watch the movie over and over and over again. Nothing changes the Samuel thing every time. But like games, every time you see the performance, it's slightly different. Some things have changed

Hey Taylor, I have to agree with you. I've watched Sonic the Hedgehog, I've watched the latest Mortal Kombat and even Uncharted, which I made us all about. But film, film, film, film, film adaptations of video games. Yay. And I feel like they're just trying to make money off of the video games and its fans. But I feel like they really should just leave it as a video game and let fans enjoy it as is

Nay to video game movies

I am right there with you, Taylor. I think most of the video game movies that come out are pretty garbage or honestly, even if they're not garbage, I think it's like a very much misrepresentation of like what the video game is or what it's trying to depict. I think the only two movies I could realistically even like get through. But at the end of the day, I didn't even think they were that amazing was pixels

All about the 💰

So, yeah, I'm looking forward to that one. So, yeah, that's my take. I think Hollywood doesn't have a choice. They have to have these properties that people know in order to make money. We're going to see a never ending cycle of Marvel movies, Star Wars movies, video game movies and fascinating theories. Sorry, but it's facts

A pretty interesting discussion that you guys have entered, and I guess I'm a Johnny Khan lately to the conversation, but here goes. I worked for Atari back in the 70, only on the coin operated size, but was there when Atari did Et the game, and boy, was that a fiasco. First of all, they built a really s***** game. Secondly, they completely mismanaged and misunderstood the audience they were going for

@Howie That's so cool you worked at Atari!

Hey, Howie, my name is Josh and I'm the host of a video game podcast called Still Loading. I was wondering if you would be interested in coming onto the podcast. I would honestly love to have you on to talk about your game, your game design career, and your work in the games industry. From Atari all the way up. I saw in your profile you worked with Mattel and Nintendo and all these other amazing companies

Hi Josh, this is Howie. I would be delighted to jump on a podcast with you and to share some of the experiences that I've had in both the Coin Up and consumer games businesses. It's been a wild ride for me. I loved being there, loved the people that I worked with and would love to share some of those experiences. So by all means, contact me and let's do it

Only then I'm going to be able to actually bear that movie, because otherwise, if there's like you said, there's no, like, kind of an example that I have. But if I'm going to watch a movie of a game adaptation, it's going to be done perfectly and in order. And yeah, that's it
@Krishnaroxs

Well, hey, Krishna this side. And yeah, I also like movies that are based on video games. But yeah, some of them are, you know, very bad movies. Like, they just completely forgot about everything. Just, you know, just took a pile of s*** and they just throw it in the Samuel screen, like watch this

So hey Taylor, first of all, sorry for me. I'm just trying to call it. I watch a lot of issues. The same issues I have with anime also. I know it's a lot of work, but I think that will pay off because that's going to be movies about the people of it or something that happened after the U. I think that's a really great thing to add on to this

nay when it comes to adaptations, especially open-world video games

To be honest, I don't like film adaptations of video games either. Mostly because I feel like video games are video games and not films for a reason. Like this is a medium of creativity that the video game developers decide to do and it's intentional because if they had a different idea they want to put it out, then they would have done it through a movie type thing. You know, it's the same exact thing as anime TV shows becoming feature length movies
@Taylor
Taylor J
@Taylor · 1:26

@jomariexann

Granted, that's not like the cinematics are 140 hours long, but the game itself can take you that long, and there's just no way to condense that into a film. It's impossible. Bioshock, they announced that they're doing that as a TV show as well, and initially I thought that they could do it as a film, Howie
@jomariexann
Jomarie Almeus

And when you do things like this it just defeats the whole purpose of how animation really ties everything together and makes everything kind of ties better, honestly. And all in all, I feel like film, film, film adaptations of video games, Yay just be money grabbers, but they're usually very bad. I don't understand why executives keep doing the same thing over and over again. Like it just needs to stop this year, period. It's

But I'm wondering how accurate it is to the actual game or if they just spun it off of the idea of it. But I I thought it was a cool series. Like, they're definitely going to make a second part to it. And it was super interesting to watch and it was very actiony and I loved it. So let me know your thoughts

@amandaz

Hey, Amanda, that's a really good question, actually. So I'll preface this by saying that Uncharted is one of my favorite video game series of all time. I was so invested in into it in College when it initially came out, when it came out, and then they kept releasing new versions of it. I think they had a total of four, and each one just got better and better and better

Thanks for the sponse. That actually motivates me a lot to try the game out so I'll see where I can find it and give it a shot. Thanks

But I just think what I said, there's so many ideas out there that producers and directors just like, brush off and instead they go to these ideas that have already been done 100 times. And I just think the industry as a whole should really start making new things because eventually people are going to get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again
